Fuel Gauge identification

Trying to identify the fuel gauge in my 1990 740 GLE. There is apparently a VDO one (#1363771) and a Yazaki one (#1398007).

Does anyone know how to tell them apart as the one in my car is not labelled with a brand or a part number?

Pointer: a VDO cluster's odo <strike> will have numbers like this [1][2][3][4] (without gaps on the face between numbers) </strike> skip that, see Rob's post below
A Yazaki cluser's odo has gaps bewteen the numbers like this [1] [2] [3] [4] (with a little gap on the face between the numbers)

It was hard to tell this from the photo.

To be definitive means removing the cluster :

1. Yazaki cluster is p/n 1363836 and is printed in ink under the cluster below the clock.
2. Looking at the back of the cluster so that the turbo gauge hose fitting is on your upper left,, look for the word "Volvo' on the circuit 'board' to the right-hand side of the speedo. Below 'Volvo' you'll see in white letters:

'Yazaki' (a triangle) METER
JAPAN'

Now I'm confused. This link on Matthew's says that the VDO one has the last digit separate from the others (like mine:

Here's another photo of my cluster. You can see that the 100m marking is separate from the other digits.

OK it's VDO - does that that the fuel gauge will be a VDO one too? (Part # 1363771)
and one more question. The guage has a small two prong clip in the back of it with small diagrams for 60l and 80l. I presume that clip stays right in for on size fuel tank and out for the other. My tank has the 20l extension and I thought that made it 70 litres. But maybe it's 80l?

Hi O&D!! Yes you have a VDO .. we dealt with that under the voltmeter thread. I have a VDO fuel gauge in my hand (VDO 301.292/014/001) that is fittted to the backboard by 3 pins into the backboard. Also got a Yazaki still on backboard. The backboards are a different depth ... but they may well fit. Will investigate and revert. The other thing is the fuse link .... don't worry about that.

Thanks Bob12. I may have a source of a whole cluster for my 1990 740 so that might solve my fuel gauge problem.

Let's hope so .. If it's not a connectivity problem. However the more VDO's you can gather together the more choice you have .... and if it did work before and doesn't now ..!!!!
