Hello all! I am new here. Was pointed this way by friends at AussieFrogs (I drive Renaults).
Reason for my popping up here - I’ve been offered a car for my son – aged 22 – who will later this year take the test to get his drivers licence.
The car is a Volvo 940 Wagon. 230,000 kms. Always serviced to schedule with full service records. Now unregistered and has been sitting (outside) for 12 months.
Mechanic has checked for RWC – requires rear main engine seal, front discs and pads replaced for roadworthy – otherwise OK. Seems to me that roadworthy result says the car is in pretty good nick for its age.
Car offered to me cost-free. Cost will be around $1,200 for RWC repairs add rego costs and third party property insurance - we have a circa $2500 car.
Good option for a young/new driver?
Or stay away from it?
Opinions welcomed
Ian.

790 is not a thing?
perhaps 760? is it a V6?

Hello and welcome!
V90? Or 740?
Something different for a young Bloke!
If the body and interior is good then why not?
Parts for the rwc can be had via the suppliers we recommend a lot cheaper than your man may be looking at , as usual , local dealer prices are silly for imports but as an aussiefrog Renault fanatic you probably know this..
Where are you?
This helps a great deal as we Bruce's are spread far n wide but there may be one nearby who can help out with parts , repairs or both if you ask nicely.
My experience with 7 series is only a worn out non TURBO loan car that I did not like at all but coming from a later model TURBO you get that....
If it wasn't free I would have suggested a 244/245/240 or 850/x70 but others will say different!

Woops! Showing my lack of Volvo knowledge. Try 940 ... Does that make more sense :-) ?

And thanks for the welcome :-)
I agree - something different for a young bloke. He is keen on the idea. Much prefers a Euro car to a Ford/GM/Toyota of similar age/price.
In Melbourne - so I we proceed I may be asking for local advice.
Cheers
Ian.

940 would make a whole heap more sense.
a 940 is generally a good thing.

940 is a solid and pretty safe old car. Plenty of bits floating around too.

Yes! Much better!
We have a couple of great shops , Berry's in Mitcham and Voldat i n Moorabin.
Mark is on here from Berry.
And , Mark is on from Voldat/VP Tuning!
Both great chaps , worth visiting if you need a hand and both able to rwc too.
Take the plunge!
The 9 series were a step up toward a modern car so should have some good features , possibly an airbag?

Sounding good. I believe it has airbag. Going to see the car this weekend. My brother, via whom the freebie offer came, has checked it over and say it look good and that service history is all there.

The 940 is a Good, if basic car to own. Cheaper than a good vt on wagon which will chew out rear tyres...

Glad you made it over here!

Basically fine, easy to work on, reliable.
I'd say go for it.

Both of my children started on, and still drive 940. Perfect car for youngsters as they are easy to drive and comfortable, and relatively safe. An added bonus is that they learn about replacing relays and pumps and generally how to maintain things like maf's, throttle bodies and flame traps.
