Hey everyone! I posted a while ago that I was on the hunt for a C30 T5 R-Design. I questioned one that was at a Melbourne used dealer but decided it seemed a little dodgy, as they always do.
By pure luck and persistence, I managed to find a very clean face lift, 2012, 47k km, T5 R-Design example in Sapphire Black and I jumped on it! So far, as expected, it's just like a brand new car! And before you ask, I intend to give the paint a once over before I post pictures.
Perfect service history (by time, always), but it hasn't had the timing belt/water pump replaced. So being 3 years over due for the belt, I obviously intend to replace it asap!
Now I'm pretty tech and mechanical savvy, owning a 300zx Z32 for many years, doing all the work myself (including timing belt), built and restored a couple of classic cars, including a fully engineered, road legal CBR1100 engine swapped Honda S600. I want to maintain this c30 myself and so, baptism by fire, I'm going to tackle the major service myself with OEM parts.
My question is, how vital is it to have the cam locking tool? Apart from making it easier/safer is it necessary? I think from what I've read, it's 100% necessary if I was to do the cam seals, but if I don't (which I'll do a pre-inspection to determine any oil leaks), do I need to lock it or can I simple line up my marks? Does VVT play a part in this?
