Did you get a repaired ABS unit?
WestcoastPete
Yup

Righto. Reckon I'm going to order some of those ABM headlights I linked to on eBay. It says they can fit an HID to them before they send them, but after a fair bit of research I'm not sure they won't be too glarey. Had anyone got any advice on this?

Ordered and received headlights. Was a pretty simple swap, but might still need some adjustment. Will post pics later.
Just been to Rye for the weekend and all went well. The only hint of trouble was trying to start it after a 30min walk on the beach on the way home. It just turned over and over and wouldn't start. Plenty of cranking power. Have it a couple of pumps but wasn't sure if that was a good idea on a car like this (used to carbies). Eventually it hinted at firing up and on the next attempt it reluctantly ran and was then faultless. It's got a cable accelerator. Can anyone offer a suggestion about why it might have done this? For a minute or so I had that dreaded feeling that I'd be having to make calls and organise towing and all of that shitty jazz.

MAF is on way out.
Vac line on end of inlet Mani , drivers side is stuffed and off.
O2 sensor.
Coolant temp sensor.
Idles air control calve needs cleaning.
If it doesn't start at all or battery is a bit weak , turn off and disconnect the MAF plug , it will start and run on a set parameter to get you home. It should run fine and can run at any speed or distance but will use more fuel.

I got an eBay China MAF for a previous car much chagrin of a good Volvo tech!
It worked.
Much cheaper.....
Dunno how long it would last though.

I'm glad its still for the most part been a reliable car. With the not starting it's possible the cylinders became flooded. I've heard stories of people parking an 850 or the like, coming back and then it won't start because it flooded. Maybe check the injector seals to make sure they aren't leaking. Also the fpr may be on the way out which let the fuel pressure drop resulting in you having to crank for ages to bring the pressure back up.

MAF , its the unit in the tube running from the airbox to the TURBO inlet.
It screws into the airbox lid itself and has a wired plug stuck in it at the rear at say , 2 o'clock position , pull that out , that is the most common thing that goes wrong , has happened to my low km 855R , my old and current v70Ts , right now I am battling the issue....getting 0173 codes I need to clear as well.
Is yoyrs throwing a CEL light on the dash?
The orange triangle.
Did you get a $27 obd code reader or a $10-14 Bluetooth dongle to use an app on your phone?
A must have.
WestcoastPete
Reckon I'll take it to Berry's eh. I'll call Dave.

If you unplug the MAF and it starts and runs , but a new MAF , swap it yourself and save money on labour.
WestcoastPete
It will definitely start that way yes, but it's starting with it plugged in too. It was just that one time yesterday when it didn't. If the MAF was dead and it won't start with it plugged in, but will when it's unplugged, I'd go with that, but that snot what's happening. Yet anyway.

Righto. The aircon buggered up driving around today. It's doing the classic* runs for a bit and then doesn't after a it warms up thing, so it looks like the clutch thingy. My plan is to do the old cable tie treatment tomorrow before heading down to the beach for the weekend, but I'm just a touch confused. Here's a cable tie pic:
And here's a bread clip image:
See how they're a bit different? Maybe it'll make more sense when I actually get stuck into it tomorrow. Is that cable tie achieving the same thing by pushing the clutch in a bit?
Righto

They do the same thing, I have been running the cable tie fix for 3 years. The bread clips can fall out if not glued.
VolvoDeger
yes it will run constantly though and if you understand how a system should work , you then know that a pressure change is required. but don't get me wrong this will get you going and cool.
WestcoastPete
My understanding is that it won't change the way it runs, it'll still cycle on and off as normal.
Anyway, it's done now. It is flicking on and off, but mostly staying on and the air is cold. Clearance is actually pretty tight now. Gunna take it for a run down to Rye now.
nickm
It runs as it should.
The problem is the clearance on the clutch. As it heats up the clutch gap becomes too big and it disengages. With the zip ties the gap is reduced and the clutch operates as intended. Easier fix than re shimming and if you need to do it every 3 years so be it.
nickm
If it is still cycling you may need to regass.

Nup. Plans aborted. Terrible traffic in 44C heat and the aircon wasn't doing anything. It'd come on occasionally but it didn't really cool and then it'd stop altogether and blast hot air. With a 1 week old in the car it was too stressful and dangerous to keep going.
It's pretty demoralising really. I know I can get it fixed but it's broken again and stopped us going away for the weekend with family. It's cost more than $3500 to get roadworthied and reasonably reliable and it's still breaking. I like the car, I'm trying to love it, but it's let us down again. Right now I just wish we'd kept the boring shitty XTrail.

Have faith they are a good car.......................................................
