We need a bit more information on your year model of Volvo but a generic explanation on how this fault can happen would be:
It's likely that the wiring loom is damaged where it passes from the vehicle body, into your driver's door.
Opening and closing the door thousands of times can damage the insulation, and cause short circuits.
New vehicles use a communication network to send signals around the vehicle. The switches for your windows don't directly distribute the electricity to the power window motors. They simply send a message that you want your window up/down or your door unlocked, or your mirror adjusted, or tell the car that your door is open/closed.
If that network is damaged (broken wires), then no messages can be sent or received.
The driver's door is the Master and the other doors are slaves, but the slaves can still operate independently via their own switches.
