Hey guys,

I'm looking at a 2009 XC70 (P3) with the 3.2L SI6 engine tonight with a friend. It apparently has a full service history and looks to be in good nick but I guess we'll see when I look at it. What do you guys reckon are the things to watch out for or things to be aware of when inspecting it?

I've brought an OBD-II scan tool with me to make sure there aren't any sneakily deleted codes but I'm not super familiar with this engine so if you guys could tell me the problem areas I'd be super grateful.

Cheers

I'm no expert by any means, having only had limited experience (a couple of months, vs 17 years with the P2 type) with a 2008 version of the same car…and since no one else has put up an answer…

As I understand it, these engines can use a bit of oil, so that would be an obvious thing to watch out for. The cams are chain driven, but they are supposedly not maintenance free, not sure what the service interval is on those…

I'd definitely be checking out the PCV system to make sure that it is not blocked. The transmission requires periodic oil flushes, (so called sealed for life, but that's BS) change at least every 80 K. Whilst you are at it, change the oil in the angle gear / Haldex / differential. I use VIDA to interrogate the OBD 2 port, generic readers are probably OK, but wont give you much (or any) information on the various other systems in the car.

Our car has had the odd clunky gear change early on, and apparently not since the transmission flush. Hopefully it will stay this way, otherwise, the car may need a solenoid pack to be changed in the transmission, will cross that bridge if and when we get to it..

The car is very pleasant to drive, and my son loves it, good luck with your search, and hopefully a few other more experienced owners chip in with their advice.

And another thing, we have an XC 90 D5 which has the same type of transmission system, if you are planning to use this car for towing, make sure that you fit the biggest oil cooler that you can, and do the transmission oil change even more regularly.

FCP Euro has a very good video titles 3.2 diagnostic & maintenance guide. I am not an IT guru or I would provide a link
