It continues to current cars. 10th digit of the VIN denotes the year. From 2001 - 2009 they are numbers the same as the year and then 2010 MY cars start from A.

Were VINs standardised as early as 1963?
Did all Volvos assembled in Oz have a VIN?

    Forg Were VINs standardised as early as 1963?

    No. They used many different schemes over the years, but the year model letter was present consistently from 1963.

    Forg Did all Volvos assembled in Oz have a VIN?

    Well… they all had a chassis number, then later followed the European style VIN scheme (ISO whatever-it-is) rather than the US-type VIN scheme. All CKD kits kept the year model letter.

    Factory codes came later - they were -
    0 = Sweden (VKAV) Kalmar
    1 = Sweden (VTV/VTM) Torslanda
    2 = Belgium (VEC)
    3 = Canada (VCV) Halifax I think
    4 = Thailand (TSA)

    5 = Malaysia (SMA)
    6 = Australia
    7 = Indonesia
    A = Sweden (Uddevalla)
    D = Italy (Bertone)
    E = Singapore

    But … HOW CAN THEY SEE INTO THE FUTURE?!?!
