I’m thinking of front brake caliper options for the rally car. I’d like to only run a single hose to the caliper.
That leaves me with, I think, 2 obvious options:
a) internally cross drill the existing calipers ( which are widened to fit over vented 164 disks) and plug up a lot of holes, or
b) fit calipers from an ABS 240 which already have only one hose.
I understand the 240 caliper mounting tabs need machining and the mounting holes enlarged.
Has anyone done the latter? Any opinions? Or should I leave well alone?
Ignorant question: do 144s and 240s use the same pad?
144 and 240 front calipers
Not sure on the pads, a parts book will tell you. Or look up ipd/FCP/Skandix and look at what they list for 140 and 240.
Not sure ABS calipers will be easy to source.
There was a small adapter I saw years ago that banjo bolted onto the two caliper inlet fittings and had one hose connector to convert a 240 caliper to a single hose. Effectively a brass (or something) rectangular prism/block with two holes all the way through and a hole at one end with a thread. It may be worth researching.
As for the 240 caliper onto a 140 with the vented rotor, yes I have done it. There is a story here somewhere that was done for the clubs magazine, I think it is in articles. Has pictures and measurements. It was not that hard in the end, just lots of trying different options until one worked.
I’m currently in the US and can source ABS calipers easily enough here. I suspect Mark Iceton would have them also.
The adapter sounds interesting if I could source one with imperial fittings for a 144 caliper. However my reason for looking away from the 144 caliper is that occasionally the o-rings in the spacer weep. The ABS caliper avoids that.
I’ve looked online and most of the time (repeat MOST) it gives the same part numbers. But I don’t trust them, hence asking here!
I’ve seen the article you mention. He uses non-ABS calipers. I assume they are the same dimensions as the ABS ones. Basically I’m being cheap: I have lots of very good quality 144 pads and won’t go down the 240 route unless I can use them.
