Hey guys and girls, when you change a part what do you do with the old part ?
For some reason I've kept every nut bolt screw hose whatever apart from the exhaust and rotors that I've changed .
We've recently moved and it's been brought to my attention I have far to much umm... crap lol in boxes and I think I need a skip !

I think I need to make 3 piles , keep , sell and ditch.

Do you keep old parts ?

Depends on the part.

When the bushes went in the 965's lower control arms, I bought a complete new set of arms since the labour charge for doing an R&R of the arms and changing the bushes would end up more than the new arms. So I kept the old arms and when the bushes in the new arms are shot, I'll press out the bushes in the old arms, replace 'em, and swap the old arms back in.

Basically, I keep old parts that can be easily refurbished.

Old water pumps, worn/cracked brake rotors etc, to to the tip or Simsmetal.

(That said, there needs to be A Reckoning around here - I have too much surplus).

I’ve never switched-out much which still had any sort of life in it … most of it just went in the household garbage bin.

I keep stuff that is hard to find/repairable, provided it's not too difficult to store. I try not to hold onto things I don't expect to actually use, a lot of parts degrade just sitting on the shelf so I find it's getter to move them on if I can.

A lot of metal parts, like nuts and bolts for example, I have a tin of paint thinner, I just dump them all in there. Come back weeks later, pull them out and rinse them then chuck them in the vat of used fasteners.

I was keeping the old bits when doing a refresh of my V40, mainly as a reminder of what had been done. I took this photo after I replaced the cargo area trim. Binned the lot after this pic except the VVT actuator, couple of D-pillar rear tray clips and the grille.

Started a couple of hours ago and it's going OK letting go , parts so far for the bin

Pair of quarter panels is always worth keeping if you have the space IMO, it's one of the more common places to get dents/damage
