Lots of good info here, though few 960s went to Australia, so I'll try.
Love the 960, want to keep it going (150k miles), replaced head gasket, motor's fine. Issue is loss of the A341E's converter lock up (code on cheap reader, w/CEL and flashing arrow light), AND (per Volvo's reader) bad trans Fluid Temp Sensor (FTS is obsolete/unavailable). TCM needs signal from FTS to trigger converter's solenoid (all solenoids are clean/connected, could not find factory replacement for TC solenoid - those sold as such were just wrong - no possible fit). Trans works fine except for no lockup, BUT started to throw P7040 (no converter lockup) code at closer and closer intervals following manual reset until now triggered all the time. All wires connected, FTC not removed/tested. Always changed trans fluid (full) every 30k miles.
I'm staying off the motorways to avoid overheating the trans due to no lockup, but I'd like to try to fix the problem without getting ripped off by the knee-jerk "needs a complete rebuild at 2x car's value."
Based on the above, any thoughts as to the likely culprit? These are good transmissions that should last, especially with the care I give it, but TCs do die. If it's the FTC, is there a fix to bypass/fool the FTC to "show" the TCM the signal it needs to trigger lockup? Any thoughts along these lines appreciated, especially. Not sure a full removal/rebuild is justified, even if the parts were/are available, but would appreciate thoughts on that, as well.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
