Depends how much it's leaking! If you clean it up and it's very slow they may not notice. If it's collecting in the boots or piddling out, it'll be a fail most likely.

That sounds logical.
So at this stage then, I'll consider whether this car is worth it, or if I should wait for a manual even if I need to spend a bit more. I'll post back should I need more help!

I was in the same situation - I got impatient, started looking at autos, and just when I was getting desperate/exasperated, a manual wagon showed up (albeit in rough condition). The stars may align when you least expect it.
Good luck!

Get some saved searches setup on Gumtree, ebay and carsales so you get immediate emails when manual wagons get listed.

Good plan, I'll get that set up in the next couple of days.

You may remember that a few weeks ago, I found this one on Gumtree
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/weston/cars-vans-utes/1989-volvo-240-gl-wagon-/1084045766
but when I rang the seller up, he had already sold it.
Would I be right, do you think, in assuming that this one
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/watson/cars-vans-utes/volvo-240gl-wagon/1085463385
is exactly the same car, being offered by the new seller? I hardly ever see these for sale in Canberra, and this one is the same colour, year and body style with the same wheels - what do you think?
lasercowboy
Yup those rims are unusual. Looks like the new seller is trying to make a quick buck...
240
Either that, or he's bought it and there's something wrong with it...
But not necessarily, so if it is a good one, do you reckon it's worth the asking price? I'd obviously try to negotiate him down a bit if I bought it.
The fact that it looks like it's in fairly good condition make me think that it's probably been maintained well but I guess there's no definite way of knowing.

Yep that's a lot of coin for a 240.
When I sell mine, possibly early next year, I'd be looking for $2000 with lots of good parts on it.
240
That's what I thought. I imagine the seller will have trouble selling it for that much so maybe I'll give it a while and then see if he'll take less, once he realises he probably won't get 3k for it...
Is yours a manual? If it ticks the right boxes, I'd consider waiting until next year and buying it from you when you sell it.
240Joe
Unfortunately mines auto. I do nave a lot of manual conversion parts but not the rare-ish flywheel, so they prob won't help.
Here's a link to my wagon thread which shows most of the good bits.

That's a shame - I do like your car, especially the front end of it with the black grille/trim.
You're in Vic though anyway which is a bit far away for me.
Will you be replacing it with something when you sell it?
240Joe
I'm probably going to get an early V70. After 14yrs of daily driving a 240 it about time to upgrade. I'll still keep one 240 though.

97-98 v70 is a great point in time tech vs safety vs power vs features time.
240Joe
I totally agree.
I also consider them one of the newest "classic" Volvos before they lost their boxy charm.
egads (she/her)
Spot on.
240
Yep, I agree with that too. Although from what I've heard, the V70s have more to go wrong and aren't quite as long lasting as the RWD Volvos, is that more or less true?
240
@240Joe - given your daily driver at the moment is an auto at the moment - how bad is an auto 240 compared with a manual? Obviously I'd prefer to buy a manual as it'd be more fun, but in the end my main priority is having a car that will transport me reliably so I guess I could compromise on the transmission if I found a decent auto one, what do you think?
egads (she/her)
The later 240 auto (aw70) is pretty solid and responsive. Manual will "feel" quicker but an auto 240 is still a good place to be.
