GpA 240 1986 Francevic model - strange rear feature

…. I thought I knew a fair bit about the GpA machines but this major part coming off the petrol tank area has me flummoxed.
Attached pic - see below rear bumper.
Some kind of ? Odd cooler? We know the Water injection tank was mounted forward of the petrol tank area.
Any knowledge appreciated.

I think it might be artistic license, couldn't find anything in any racing pics matching that tank.

A diff oil cooler was often fitted to the rear of the cars, but I don't recall seeing one fitted to the fuel tank of any of the three Volvo Dealer Team cars when they ran in 1986.

@242GT is more familiar with the 4th 240T in OZ, Richard Prince's former car, and may know if he fitted one.

AFAIK the DTM and ETC cars did have them in 1986.

I've been going to The Rev Doctor, who worked on both the B234FT 740 and the 240T ... I've seen the 240T on the hoist a few times, and I'd remember if I'd seen a shiny I-beam glued to the bottom of the tank. 🙂

One thing that DID occur to me after Googling the same images shown above, is that some of the cars definitely had a large box under the tank, probably for aero reasons ... I'm referring to the car shown in @adrianw's picture above. I guess there IS a chance there was some sort of cooler-thingy hidden underneath that, not as big as in the model but then the model might not be 100% proportional. I doubt it, but I guess it's possible.

As far as I can remember the old Laurie Hazelton 242GT GrpA didn't have a diff cooler.

I heard Richard lives in Qld now , be great to catch up with him , nice bloke. Had alot good times racing in the VSCC with him.

Forg I'm referring to the car shown in @adrianw's picture above.

44 looks like the AVDT built car. They appear to be very recent pics. The blue wheels tell that the pic was taken after Thor Rustad rebuilt it, and Mark Petch bought it. @adrianw were these first 2 pics taken at Winton?

(The AVDT-built car never raced at Winton in 1986 - Robbie and JB raced the 405 and 603 cars there for the ATCC round). 405 was Mark Petch's original 240T, and in1986 its forward-facing war stripe was a lighter shade of blue than the ones on 603 or the AVDT car. The AVDT car wasn't built until after the 1986 ATCC was over.

The 3rd pic of 44 looks like it was taken at Sandown in 1986.

thanks I had to do more sleuthing on the location, I didn't think it was Winton, it was the John Bowe car from 1986 Bathurst from what I could work out. The big box section at the rear is the alloy drop tank from what it looks like.

there was a video from recent times of John Bowe driving a racing 240 on the track on YouTube, that's still available
