Interstate Insurance Cover - Car Purchase

Hi All,

I'm based in VIC and will head to the NSW border to collect a car in early July but I wondered how do I go about getting insurance for the trip home? In the past I've contacted my insurance (Lumley Special Vehicles) but they won't insure as the car isn't in my name yet. Which makes no sense :-/

I was thinking of just taking out some online policy to cover me for the trip home and then cancel it in the cooling off period but is this possible considering the car is on NSW reg?

I looked into “how to start a policy before owning the car” online, and while I couldn’t actually find the answer to that question, numerous pages were telling me to get all the quotes beforehand and start the one I chose by telling the insurance company beforehand to start on the day I pick it up.

They were all Strayan pages, so it seems others are as surprised as I am that you can’t take out the policy beforehand.

I wonder if this is just a Lumley thing? Or alternately, I wonder if calling them back, which will likely have you talking to a different person, will get you a different answer?

Try getting a cover note with Lumley.

If they won't do cover notes, try one of the bigger mobs, e.g. NRMA, etc, who do. The cover note, as it's name implies, covers you until you can take out a policy.

NRMA’s site explicitly says they don’t do cover notes, so no dice there.

I suspect cover notes may have disappeared ‘cos half of ‘em were never converted into a policy. Helluva lot of people used a cover note to give them insurance coverage for free for 2 weeks while sorting out the cheapest policy, and that cheapest policy wasn’t necessarily the cover note provider …
