240 Windscreen removed

Hi all, slowly getting familiar with 240 life

Any jobs worth doing whilst the screen is out? Removed for leak and now rust repairs.

Is the dash easier to remove with no screen?

Anything else particularly easier to access without a screen to contend with?

Not really, the windscreen is basically it’s own component

Make sure to do the rust repair correctly, it’s something you do not want to do twice

Just curious regarding your direction once the dash is removed, replace with good 2nd hand or re-cover?

Porkchop Yet to research this. Leather or alcantara maybe? Easy to prep and spray satin black over the front metal area. But I feel like the more 'soft furnishings' in the car the better for noise adsorption… so would probably line underneath with some sound deadening where easy. And metal on dash top could benefit from soft alcantara type finish too. ??

I don't know how to smooth out cracks in dash first, maybe trim edges flush and just fill with bog? Then reskin with whatever…

Suggest you use the late model windscreen seal, the all black one without the chrome. They tend to seal better. A windscreen repair shop will likely only have the new ones, when having one replaced a few years back I was told this re sealing.

dmc Its a replacement windscreen already, with the black surround on glass, which may not be so OE looking, but certainly a neat finish. And scored some 'universal' rubber seal, slightly wider than the stuff I cut off. No metal trim on this 245 when I got it, which is a bit sad, but it's probably quieter without.

beno70 yeah you can get crack repair compound for dashes, i think its like body filler but more flexible.

beno70 Mine's in pretty similar condition to yours I'm afraid, you used to be able* to get repair kits for vinyl trim on cars which had a tube of black, brown or whatever and a metal stamp that had the "leather" grain texture for embossing it whilst soft (might even have involved some low heat in the process)…

Porkchop Usually in the $350 - $400 range + shipping, but that's presuming you have the crash pad out of the car.
