245 Rear axle bearings

Hi all,

Just going right through my '89 245, bushes, shocks, brakes and such. I've do the front wheel bearings so thinking of doing the rears.

I've heard they're not prone to failing and I've pulled the disc off and listened to the bearing, they seems fine, hard to tell exactly as the diff obviously makes them feel a bit 'clunky' but there is some in and out play, is this normal? i would not have thought so? I do have a shop press so I can do them just don't want to be doing it for no reason!

Is there anything that resembles bearing noise?

Sometimes all that is needed is some quality rear axle fluid (I use amsoil severe gear 75w90 mixed with nulon smooth shift G70) and like magic the noise disappears

Try that before going to the trouble of replacing the axle bearings

That's my thoughts, I cant feel or hear any bearing noise its just that slight in and out play on the half shaft, no more than 0.5mm? Thanks for the heads up re the Amsoil, looks like that's where the moneys going!

On that same thread my daughters manual 240 (M47) is noisy, given they run with transmission fluid would the Amsoil be too heavy for that, it is noisy but may also be the thrust bearing??? just thinking!

Amsoil have a big range of products.

I get mine from importer in Melbourne, very knowledgeable guy who builds Honda race cars for some series they run in.

I spent a lot of time there that day, he can talk but it’s all information you want!

He knows what’s needed.

GL4 (only) is the only oil that won't eat the synchro rings in the M47. (Ask me how I know this information)

Severe gear will be fine for that.

I have also used Redline MTL in M47 with good results

I could also use the old banana skin method!
