paul0075 No cooling system work today. I had my hose replacement work proven today with no leaks of fuel or vacuum. However the carby started pissing out a stream of fuel from under it. According to the suggestions on VEGA on Facebook, the float is stuck, so tomorrow I will try and unstick it so I can continue with the other jobs, but I will need to unbolt the carb and put the kit through it and clean it. I've never had to do one before, so I am a little apprehensive. So instead of the cooling system work, I ended up doing a few small jobs over the period of an hour: replaced battery with correct model (now it starts way better than before), replaced wiper refills, adjusted windscreen washer nozzle, replaced driver's door light switch. Over the weekend I found that my tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints were fine except the rubber has split and started letting in dust, so I ordered replacement ball joints from Mark at Berry in Melbourne. They had entire tie rods with ends in stock, but that would've blown out my budget for this fortnight.

I used to think like that with the budget thing, but now I just think about what makes me happy. I'm not talking about being careless and silly with my money, but too many times I had to miss out for the sake of saving $50. Now a days i just pay to play and enjoy. Get those tie rods and get that car on the road! We all want to see it!
paul0075 If only it was that simple. I literally couldn't spare anymore than I had spent. Need to make what is left last another week :)
paul0075 Yesterday I got started on the cooling system. I swear the bottom hose is factory, it's very crunchy and old. Water came out clean and without any oiliness, which I am glad about The pump to bottom radiator hose pipe is rusted out, with bits missing where the hose goes on. Did a straight water flush on the radiator, using the hose on high. Flushed out some black muck which had been lining the tanks, I'd imagine the remains of the ancient hoses. Will use some radiator flush to do it properly in the next couple of days. Scrounged up more money to buy more bits. Return pipe, the abovementioned pipe, tie rods, sway bar D bushes, carby gaskets and a couple of spare water pump seals - just in case. This lot is coming from George Minniason / Volvo 1800-120 Parts.
paul0075 No work on the Jaffa today. Got back from Father's Day lunch late and tired. The plan tomorrow, is to continue with cooling system flush. I have 2 bottles of Mukowt, and hoping it will be enough to get it flowing properly again and to get my heater working on a higher setting than lukewarm. Once that's had a flush, I can then change the hoses, water pump and thermostat and load it up with anti-freeze / anti-boil. Will start on the brakes after that, just flush out old fluid, replace with new, pressurise and test. Thankfully I live on a crescent and can do some circuits with the 144 to test. Final to do list is as follows: Change transmission fluid and filter Change diff oil Change brake fluid and bleed system Change steering box oil Replace tie rod ends & ball joints Replace front bushes Replace sway bar pin bushes and D bushes Replace rear bushes Replace / reset brake failure light switch Service carby Grease door hinges Flush cooling system, install water pump and hoses Repair quarter window frame rust Respray / treat driver’s B-pillar Respray / treat LH corner of boot frame near seal Wheel alignment and balance Am waiting on metal cooling system pipes, D bushes for sway bar, some carby gaskets and tie rods to arrive via courier. Still need to order suspension bushes, but need money first :)
paul0075 So after lots of swearing, some sunburn, things breaking and several new parts that wouldn't fit because they're meant for older 140s, the engine bay / cooling system / heater assembly are all back together. Just in time to pack up because its twilight. Thanks to some fine troubleshooting from Matt Williams and Patrick Slattery, I was able to get some things sorted that could've been major problems. Sadly I had no chance to bleed brakes today as planned. Nor have I had a chance to do a pressure test on the cooling system and heater yet. I think I will see what time work ends tomorrow and do it then. At least it all looks sexy with new hoses and clamps. And thanks to David Hallam's advice I cleaned out the expansion bottle so you can see through it. I ended up using degreaser instead of what it was David said to use. Mainly because I forgot which stuff he said to use, however the degreaser with a handful of rocks and some water and a good shake fixed it.
paul0075 Well the Jaffa is ready to roll. Booking it in at the mechanic tomorrow, so hopefully it will go in on Tuesday. Will need to get a UVP as well. Some pix!
paul0075 Thanks! Now let's hope it A: passes and B: won't clean out the bank on the final work with the mechanic.
paul0075 Drove it to Ike's Motors in Phillip today. All went well. Temp gauge sat mostly halfway for the 40 minute trip. Speeds between 50 and 95 km/h mostly. Brakes still need a fair bit of work. Still spongy but work. And hold pressure if you release and reapply. Pulls to the left slightly when stopping. Nothing leaked or fell off except the centre brake light. Did everything it was meant to. Car has rego check tomorrow to determine the must do items. Then the work begins from Monday. Will upload some video of its first trip later.
paul0075 Ta. No i haven't got clips or glass yet. I had used adhesive strips with the 240 clock rubber to fill the gaps on the light but it hasn't worked. None of the adhesive strips seem to support the weight of the light once the glass gets hot
