What is then general thinking behind buying new exhausts in Sydney?
My 240 Wagon needs a new exhaust.I don't know whether it's more economical to buy from IPD the 2 1/4" cat back pipes and import or have it made up here in Sydney.
I have a 531 head with o/s valves.I need a cat but don't really want the original style one.I want hi-flow.Probably 2" in and 2 1/4 out to make the conversion in pipe size. I also want the first muffler delete and have an unused rear muffler on hand that I realize I will have to get the in/outlets converted to 2 1/4" .I have a welder that I have sh*t skills with to try and add the 2 1/4 pipes to.
Opinions and advice welcomed.

If you can get the car up on jack stands and can safely cut tube and muck about with it then do eeeet yourself.
You learn as you go, can always go over welds if leaky .
Costs from USA are silly now.

Ex850R thanks.The last time I got an exhaust from the states our dollar was very competitive,not so now. I'll have a go at it.

If you want a stainless one, the IPD system is reasonably competitive on price, but otherwise I always get exhausts made custom. I use Performance Exhaust Centre in North Parramatta. The reason I prefer that is because they just make nice systems, they use bolt flanges rather than slip joints, and they swap out the rubber band mid-muffler mounts with something a big fatter (I forget off the top of my head what the mounts come from, I think it is some Audi), and because of that they can hug the underside of the car closer than the factory system does.

Also, given you live nearby, if you want to hear what the stainless IPD system sounds like on a K cam B21E, I have it fitted to my white 244, happy for you to come check it out. It does sound pretty sweet.

Thanks James, I've got the plain steel IPD 2 1/4 cat back on my sedan but the catalytic in that is, well, empty. I needed a cat quickly to get my sedan back on the road. The one my guy had rattled. So I told him to "gut" it(sorry enviroment ). That car is N/A 530 and sounds great. Maybe that exhaust is not suited to it.
Ok, I think I know which way I'll go. I think I'll ask Parra mufflers to make some bits.
Do you have custom headers or stock?
Maybe I'll try and get some Hurricane headers.

Ramrodfunk in my cars:

'92 245, 2.3 NA, 4-2-1 extractors, 2.5" system, 200-cell cat, hot dog resonator, turbo rear muffler. KL Racing T3 cam. Obnoxiously loud. I don't know who made the extractors as I picked them up second hand, but they look like hurricane headers for sure. Exhaust was made by Performance Exhaust Centre. They also modified the 2-into-1 collector to have a 2.5" output instead of the original 2.25".
'77 244 DL 2.1 carb, turbo, log manifold, 3" downpipe into resonator, 2.5" to rear muffler, super quiet. Also made by Performance Exhaust Centre.
'77 244 DL 2.1 kjet, NA, stock manifold, stock downpipe, had PEC add a resonator, I forget the exact spec but closer to the size of the Volvo mid-muffler than a hot dog. IPD stainless system behind that. No drone (…once I added the resonator, yes drone before that). Nice crisp note, extremely satisfying crackle on throttle lift-off, sporty but not obnoxiously loud.

They're nice blokes, they do fixed price upfront quotes, I think they know me as Mr Oz Volvo Guy. If you dropped off a car with the extractors fitted and nothing else, probably looking at $1500 give or take. Used to be a lot cheaper of course.

I got the Simon's exhaust system put away for mine, I got it shipped from Europe when the shipping wasn't crazy priced. The reviews were pretty good, it had a good sound to it and I liked the layout of it.

As an aside and for information of those reading who may want stock type , Volvo sells the new ones for most all older models , Berry Motor Group has some in stock at all times and good prices plus 2YR warranty via Volvo Australia.

As a pipe fitter tig welder I’d love to make them too but I’m not getting them made for myself yet so I might ask my work mate , a perfectionist like I used to be before aches and pain hit. (I’ve got plans for an inlet manifold onto the cut up Redblock inlet I have sat at work too and old mate is brilliant ally welder…..)
