Redblock crank harmonic balancer pulley

This is one of the last pieces I need before I can finish putting together a fresh engine for my turbo wagon. I'm hoping to finish up in the 3 to 4 hundred wheel range so looking for reliable something to suit.

Are there any brands that are better quality? I hear stories of some falling apart and I'd really like to avoid that. I see some solid aluminium ones from companies like KL Racing but I don't know how I feel about those. Anyone used them long term? I don't see solid ones on other engine builds like 2J, RB or LS but they pop up a bit for Volvo. Is it just lack of options for redblock?

I’ve had good luck with the aftermarket one’s available from the American suppliers, for a third of the cost

When you get one, put a paint line over the metal-rubber-metal join, so if it slips any you’ll notice immediately

When I went to VROM in 2015, I brought home three KL Racing one-piece underdrive pulleys for B230s, and all were sold.
Raebird bought one, IIRC one went to Scott in Melbourne with The Moose (green 244), and I forget who bought the third one. Of those folks, Raebird AFAIK has been using his long term.

With the B230 Project GoaT Engine coming up for a build, I reckon I'll order a single-piece KL Racing pulley for it. There have been reports that new original type multi-piece replacements are having rubber failures prematurely, just like many of the old ones are now having due to age. Even the high priced ones in blue boxes.

You've probably seen the pics where somebody's painted a white line from the inside to the edge of the pulley? And you see after a while, the inside and outside lines don't line up an more? They don't make 'em now like they used to....

It's also worth checking the water pump pulley for cracks, in case Gronk, the PO's mechanic, over-tightened the fan belts at some point.

Thanks gents, this is very helpful.

A few things I liked about the KL ones was the pulley was already cut for their billet steel crank gear and woodruff key (which I already have) and it has provisions for a trigger wheel for the crank angle sensor.

I was kind of hoping someone would have made an ATI Damper adaptor kit by now but it doesn't look like it.

I run the KL under drive pulley in my wagon, have had it for idk five years or so now, no issues with steering or alternator either.

Just weld the one you have. The noise increase is minimal if any. I have a solid underdrive one in my spares tubs that I bought on here for $50ish.
