Hello there,
Newby from Melbourne
I have a Lovely XC60 2009 T6, it goes like a rocket and we love it as a family car, in the past few months the hydraulic arms on the tailgate have started to make a whining noise...
or screeching.. it is now to the point where it sounds like I'm killing a CAT on the boot of the XC60!!
I have spoken to some mechanics and they suggested to put 'sewing machine industrial oil' I have done that to the point where the oil leaks out and my back bumper bar is shiny full
of oil.
The noise has gotten LOUDER now... has anyone had the same issues?? how did they fix?/ any advice... would really appreciate it.
Apologies if this has been covered before in the forum, I did a search and did not find any matches....

Well this is a new one!
Talk with Mark and the boys out at Berry Motor Group , in fact , go there for servicing , you will never regret the drive out there as the service is second to none and way cheaper than a dealer ( stealer...) with honest advice and greta technicians.

Who do you currently service the car every six months with? Take it to the dealer and they will replace. Everyone else won't know.
Personally my arms work and my parents never needed an automatic tailgate. Just change it back to a manual operating one.

^ not very helpful.....

Thanks guys,
I used to take it to 'city Volvo' in South Melbourne, now that I don't have to and it is out of warranty I get it service at All Car Service Centre in Williamstown Road , Yarraville, Cameron and his crew mainly specialise in European cars all the locals go there and have nothing but good things to say about them, I recently got the car serviced and had to put new DISKS and BRAKE pads, I wanted Zimmerman Disks for the performance ( don't ask.. the wife drives at 50 clicks an hour period! ) and they had no issues just charging for labour and I supplied the parts... in the past other mechanics refuse saying that for them to guarantee the work they must supply the parts as well ( more mark up I suspect of course ).
'Vee_Que' - yeah, I could turn it to manual... but now I'm too Lazy!! I would have a meltdown if I can't press that button or if my rear camera goes out of action!! he,he... ( which the bloody thing did and had to get the dealer to fix out of warranty!! ouch! )
Thanks Snoopy, I will keep the Berry Motor group in mind if I'm around their area next. ;o)
Cheers

Parts can be easily sourced from any of a dozen volvo dealers in the usa
Are you sure the sound is comming from the screws rather then the gear drive at the bottom of the arms?
Vee_Que
Honestly. Its about making sure they can gararuntee a good qaulity of work. some places will charge less in parts but more in labour. I know I won't use cheap parts supplied by a customer, when it goes wrong like I've see, you still get blamed!
Performance rotors usually can be more durable and will be thicker and not warp as easily as say cheapy rda rotors in my experience also. But if you only do city work, servicing every 8000km is recommended even in the service manual...

Hi Philia Bear : Good Points never thought of getting the arms out of the usa, ( the exchange rate sucks at the moment, might wait until it gets better ) not sure about the noise location specifically the noise is 'loud' when it opens and not so loud when it closes.... I will check out the 'gear drive' at the bottom of the arm.... good tip, thanks.
Hi Vee_Que, I hear you in my case I wanted the Zimmerman ( which was a more expensive/better quality parts ) due to the fact that I read heaps of fantastic reviews, I think my mechanic is of the same thinking as you, he would not replace 'cheap' parts as it is his warranty and reputation - we had about 6,000 klm left on the back rotors and the front ones needed attention, we thought lets do it all at once and not worry for the next 50,000 klms.... we service the Volvo every 12 months ( rego time religiously ) as it is used only for 'city/local driving' we have we have about 49,000KM on the clock on the 2009 XC60.

I mention Berry's because i had very good mechanics in Port Melbz but they charged a lot and didnt have parts on hand.
Going out to them isnt hard and you get a loan car as well.
What you get is decades of experience with VOLVO and many techs trhere as well as the owners know more than any other car repair centre.

Cool Thanks Snoopy, worthwhile keeping in mind, it sounds like they are good and affordable.

Heard of these auto struts failing / leaking.
Good to get part numbers of them and as suggested compare prices here in Aussie and O/S......I do :))
If you need partnumbers....let me know.

Good Point MR, I will have a look at the part numbers, and if unsure I will take a pic., cheers - JULIO

Part price to replace strut about 1200 bucks + labour . Volvo dealers are abt. $200 an hour or Volvo specialists (if you can locate one!) are abt. $100+ an hour. Ours has been playing up for a couple of years. Goes silent in the sun here in Qld. She Who Must Be etc,etc has put her foot down with a firm hand, but I'm still trying to pick one up second hand, would think the 90 would also be compatible but haven't got that far yet ?

I think i paid $350 or so each for genuine second hand volvo units the last time I bought some out of the USA
They came with a 12 month warranty which is more than volvo AUS gives (90 days)
Both of the indi volvo shops I use are sub $100 per hour and the volvo dealer I use sparingly is $145/h

Aha,My local man (Forest Glen) came up with the answer! A can of spray No not WD40, it comes from USA and when the propellant dries the active ingredient thickens to a wheel grease consistency and, Voila the problem she is fixed , Silence is golden ,and the Cost ....zilch!

Are you sure it's not the hydraulic arms failing and not the worm drives. Don't shoot the messenger here but I would be looking at this, if your down bayside look us up as everyone here has been working on volvo's for 20 plus years with some of us doing 30 years now. Camera issue was most likely the cable to be changed which is common as well.
cheers steve
