RWD Wagons - floppy boot strut stud

For nearly the first time ever, I have 2 working boot struts on my wagon. the old broom handle was banished from the boot, and trips to the shops were a joy.
Now, to keep my on my toes, the wobbly boot strut stud (FIG 9 in diagram below) has become so loose that the strut pops off.
Accessibility to the (now nearly untethered) captive nut inside the pillar is not good! Currently trying to get a ring spanner over the nut via the access hole in the pillar, but struggling to get the spanner over the nut - does anybody know what size captive nut was welded to the back of the pillar?

So after (gulp) nearly a year of using the broom handle, I finally got a fix.

Using an endoscope, I identified that the square nut on the inside was too close to the corner for a socket or a spanner to fit.

What did work was getting a large screwdriver wedged against the side of the nut on the inside and carefully tightening from the outside.

The endoscope was key to this, as it allowed me to see as soon as the screwdriver moved out of position and relocate - they're about $20 on eBay
