Old thread by now, but thought I might comment my experiences.
This weekend I welded the diff on my mates 1jz/r154 760. It really changes the handling of the car - not sure if it is better or worse but certainly more predictable. It chirps around corners, but with 7" tyres it doesn't grab too much. Main difference is in hard launches, where we would spin first, second and chirp into third with the open diff. Now it spins first then hooks up - feels considerably faster. Went out on some dirt back roads and noticed the difference there also. With an open diff one wheel would spin draging the rear one way, then it would grip and the other wheel would start to spin and this would propagate the longer you were on the berries. Now it just pulls one way and you correct it with your steering. One thing my mate did mention though is that it is abit too easy to get sideways now. Going onto a freeway on-ramp can be abit Tokyo drift like if you give it some around the corner, and overtaking when on boost is sketchy. It hasn't rained yet but I'd imagine it to just be a slippery slide.
I don't know how long it will last as we welded it whilst on the car with a stick welder - just crawled under the car and opened the diff, emptied it all an finished in about about 1 hour.
I don't like the idea of mechanical lockers - picture yourself driving up Falls Creek or Buffalo and taking the hairpins and part way through the corner your diff becoming either locked or unlocked, and having to suddenly account for that - not exactly confidence inspiring. I would leave them to the offroad community and look into torsen designs like true track. Perhaps an ARB air locker if you have deep pockets.
P.s. make sure you move the pan full of drained diff oil out from under the diff before you light the degreaser on fire

Careful accelerating out of a corner on a wet road also.
If you wait till above say 3,700 rpm it should be safe to floor it, in other words just above the max torque level/band, so your then in the max power building mode of engine revving out.
Rather than torque band twisting you off the road.

I'm pretty much going sideways whenever I can to work in the morning when it's wet so I'll be right at home

Sam, ive driven for 80,000km with my locking diff in all situations. Its caused no unpredictable handling in tight corners, it has a strong enough spring that it will be locked most of the time, but will unlock easily at very low speeds. Just need to drive steadily as you should anyway and its fine!

Lsd or locked.
mechanical lockers are for 4x4.

I've had a welded diff for months now haven't had any issues really, at the start it's a bit odd but once you get used to it it just turns to a good laugh ahahahah

I thought it was a bit light initially but Welded at 8 points, my mech mate did it. He said the axles will break before the welds. Guess I'll find out...

My thoughts exactly.
Send in the glue tree. Just jam rod in there as much as you can.

Alternatively.... Dont do it like country bumpkin. Locker or lsd.

Its only temporary guys, I'll prob get the xj jeep lsd as bear suggests

Unless it does awesome skids in peak hour traffic and then it stays.

I'll admit I'm a little paranoid about the axle once I get sticky tyres as she won't just be a drift pig

Haha country bumpkin i like that, that hate is reall from you vee que!!! You wont snap and axle man i run toyo r1rs and had no issues!! Just drive it stop stressing everyone its just a locked diff been done many times

Keen for an Aussie locker myself. Add some functional clickety clack

Thats what i had in mine for about 6months and i got so sick of it in a manual you get bad back lash and if you pull into a park and put the clutch in it locks unlocks and locks makes a bad bangin and churping noise haha you might have a different experience but i hated mine good for locking though cause once your foot is even resting it will lock up.

You've been driving off your ls for not even 2 years, and don't put any threads up for your car etc, its hard to believe you. Toyo r1s are not cheap, and plenty of other tyres will do the job on a non turbo 240 for grip, or even one with a td05 12b on it. Let alone the cost of an aussi locka, why not sell it if it was no good to you?

Yeah I would be happy to buy it.
I hear Alex's Aussie locker mechanically activating regularly when he's moving around places.
And that's far from annoying. The feedback through the clutch could be frustrating though nothing I couldn't/wouldn't get used to and learn.

If anyone actually wants my aussie locker they can have it but youll be so disapointed in a manual ;)
