Hi, first time Volvo owner at 55 years of age and I bought a 1977 Volvo 245 manual panel van that has been built as a wagon. I plan on doing a bash or poobox rally with it so price is essential as cars are given away to charity at the end of some events.
The car uses more oil than fuel so I thought cheapest move is buy a donor car and refit a better motor. Which models would be a straight bolt in.
Also I want to raise it 75 mm, how do you do that cheaply.
Cheers
Plates in on the lower spring perch on the back is how you do that in the rear. Not as sure on where would be good in the front.
As far as engines go, how easy on the bolt in do you want to go? An 81-85 b23e/b230e would be the most bolt in proposition for extra power.
But aren't these engines fuel injected, so needing computers and wiring. Or can the FI manifold be replaced with a carby manifold?
The are mechanically fuel injected by a system called k-jet that was also used by most euro manufacturers of the era. Electrically it is pretty much plug and play and mechanically you just swap the whole lot over.
If you find a B21 it will bolt straight in with no modification. I also have a 245 panel van wagon thing.
86 will be lh2.2 EFI. Still quite a simple conversion to drop in but will take some wiring.
Only thing is that if he is only keeping the car for the next few months it may not be profitable in terms of time and the expected reliability. If he were keeping it then an LH conversion would probably be in his best interests but maybe a straight engine swap may be better.
A b21 is the standard engine, they are a bit hard to find in reasonable condition. I'm concerned that the complexity of a rewired EFI on a 4-5,000 km trip over tough country may be too much. I only paid $700 for the van. I would prefer to keep as a carby, so unless the manifold swaps over I'll look for a carby model.
I have a spare B21 that came out of our 245 van when we did a B23ET swap. Its in reasonable condition in that it ran like a clock before it was pulled from the car. Depending on where you are I may be able to help you.
Whoops, sorry missed the bit where it was still a carby. Assumed was a kjet b21, sorry. Sounds like @Slowbrick‌ is your man.
You can run any redblock engine on a carby, the manifold bolts up. If you use a head from a mechanically injected car you'll need to block the injector holes, but that's easy.
Volvo sold the 240 with carbs through 90 in some markets randomly

No reason to not run the carb on a nice 93+ b230f motor
@Philia_Bear‌ is right on this one too. Just get a 530 head, bolt the carb up and away you go.
I have a good condition B23E here with 405 head and K cam, ie: the configuration that Volvo rated at 136hp, with around 260-270,000km on it from memory, it came from a car I used to drive regularly, and made good power.

All the bolt on parts from a '77 are a direct fit, including the carby manifold, as others have said you'll just need to plug the injector holes in the head, easily done with some small welch plugs.

I'm happy to sell it for $120, the only catch is I'm in Victoria. I can put it on a pallet and take it to my work, where it could be picked up by a courier if you make the arrangements.
