Major Ledfoot bigal;88626 wroteCould this have a limited slip diff? If you do, it's the barn find of the century. Look for the tag on the diff oil filler telling you to add LSD additive. Or is could be sticky brakes, as you said in the followup...
1971_144GL My 144 said it has a lsd in the delivery document, but not there now if it ever was, just a 4.56. but perhaps it did exist and someone changed it. I did see one once in person in Canberra.
bigal Now you have me interested (finger's crossed please be lsd!!). Going out now in my pj's and torch.
bigal Can't see a tag but the thing is so caked in filth! I shall do a degrease of it this weekend. Do the lsd outer casings look different?
1971_144GL I can. Have you met Volvo drivers? The diff centre I saw was larger and a different shape. In a 164 and marked in the casting Volvo.
bigal Ha good point. I wont loose faith just yet. No full detail of of the vehicle in the sales receipt other than volvo s/wagon and all of its numbers. Interesting to note the first few volvo dealer services and warranty work refer to it as being a 'Volvo 145 GL'.
bigal Found something.. "Rear axle, type" Then in the field next to that this is hand written.. SPICER
Ex850R Now you HAVE TO GO OUT IN YOUR Pj's with degeaser and the torch and take a picture, I can't sleep till I know the outcome!
bigal Oh its too late and i'm tired. Gotta get up in 6 hours. Glad you're excited too though! So spicer seems to be the lsd supplier for volvos of the era.. here's a good read.. http://people.physics.anu.edu.au/~amh110/Diff_LSD/diff_lsd_volvo_dana.htm
Major Ledfoot bigal;88636 wrote Do the lsd outer casings look different? Nope. Find the ID tag underneath years of muck with the part number on the diff unit itself (see pic) and check the part number against the list in the 140 Parts Manual, in Grupp 4, Sida 88. Yours being a Grande Luxe (and thus an import) means you could be lucky. Radios btw were dealer-fitted items.
bigal I have a "Carer's Day" at home today looking after our sick daughter. So.. I snuck out for a few min and started cleaning that ID tag. The first two fields are clean and read: RATIO 4.10.1 PART <something> (NR still under grime) 255802 @bgpzfm142 This number is within range on that list for 'Antispinn'. Check out the last line. What do you guys think?
Major Ledfoot 255802-1 appears to be listed as a 4.10:1 regular diff - see Grupp 4, Sida 76, line 0300 of the 140 parts manual. Although it may have been retrofitted with an LSD. A lot can happen in 40 years.
bigal If that is a regular diff list then I see that 255803 is under the same list as a 4.30.1 but that is definitely listed as an Antispinn also. I can't find that 0300 line. I'm looking at this place.. http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/140-164/140-parts-manual/140-new-type-1973-1974-parts-catalog/
Major Ledfoot bigal;88669 wroteShall I do the LSD dance of joy?? I wouldn't. It's under the "Standard rear axle"heading. See?
bigal I see how that list works now. The list I was reading wasn't as clear as that. Dammit! I have the pov pack. Cheers.
