The PO of one of the 142s did a bodgy with a 3-pin, and the other 74 142 has one of these which works fine when swapped into place.

I though all the RWD bricks used standard 3 pin flasher relays? I can check what I've got, I have a bunch, but I think they're all 3 pin types.

Thanks @Angus242164 - please let me know if you have a 4-pin unit.

iPD stocks a 4 pin unit (though it's not a Hella). The 1974 wiring diagrams show a 4 pin unit with terminals #49 (battery in), #49a (flash out), #31 (ground) and #C (pilot). The 4-pin Hella shown above appears to be OE for my Aussie-assembled 142s, as the white car has one of these fitted. When I swap its flasher over to the yellow car (which has some dodgy wiring, and also was converted from a manual B20B to an auto B20A by a PO) everything works the way it should. Both of my 142s also have 4 pin sockets for their flasher units.

Hella listed it as stock, and it appears on a VW LT van site, soi suspect it might be available in Europe...

Only reference I can find of that being used on the interwebs in in early (60's-70's) Porsche stuff. If I could read a wiring diagram the 74 greenbook might help.

Cross references with 4DB 001 887-041 which is the Saab/Porsche/John Deere part. Maybe more findable.

Cheers Egads - yes, the pin layout you've shown is the one that fits the theory. I've even done the wiring diagram thing and added pretty colours to it so I can follow the wires from the page to reality, lol.

Weird how Hella list it for the Volvo F6 truck but not the 140 series. And yet the working one I briefly extracted out of the white 142 was that exact beastie above, which worked as it should in the yellow 142. Peculiarities of Aussie CKD assembly, maybe.

The one on eBay though - $56 plus $41.50 shipping seems a trifle excessive for a relay. I'm also a bit concerned that the seller has only a 99.6% feedback ratio and the pic doesn't match the part number he's put in the description. (EDIT - actually he has and it does - reader error). This feedback didn't inspire confidence either:

"Falsche Ware. Ganze Woche hinterher telefoniert, damit überhaupt was passiert!!!"

Those Germans have a way of sounding fierce, doesn't they...

That looks like the FET16 or FET17 tridon jobbies should do it. FET 17 would need C2 fiddling.

Looking at the Volvo circuit diagram, the #C terminal on the original Hella unit appears to switch the earth connection to the turn signal globes in the instrument cluster, but it's hard to be certain without having a circuit diagram for the Hella unit. The PO fitted a FET13 3-terminal unit (no #C connection).

That is what C and C2 do so you should be golden with the fet16 or in a stretch fet17
