Hi
I have the opportunity to buy a 1989 740 GLE Turbo. It has done 289,000 klms. Interior looks ordinary. Owner tells me it has upgraded turbo and suspension on it. Did these have different turbos available. Anything I should look for when I go to inspect it?

Is it a factory 740 turbo or a stock 740GLE with the turbo added? The factory turbo models had changes made to cope with the turbo. A stock GLE engine etc won't.

It wont be a gle. They happen to be very similar spec though. Do you want it to make a faster car or just to have something a bit faster than a 240? Realistically its not worth more than a grand at those kms unless iyse had an engine rebuild or heas gasket replaced as they do run but to make more power it will blow things up easily and pump out oil with increased boost.

Yes I realised after further investigating that it wouldn't be a GLE. I would just be looking for something with a bit more zip than my 240. I was also thinking no more than a grand too. I'll be looking at it as a project to just bring it back to nice condition.
Do you think 300ks is too much?

John, if your 240 is an auto, a manual conversion will make a huge difference too.

A manual conversion would be a good idea because my auto has a huge leak in it.
