Is it necessary to get a key coded? Won't a copy do the job for a basic key without remote entry, take me home lights etc?

I had a key cut for my S40 2002. They remove the code ecu and program a key to match it.
$200 for 2 keys

Immobiliser needs the code.

The locksmith had a program to pull the code from the unit.
They have to physically remove the unit to clone the key.
He said he could do most models of Volvo as long as the unit was accessible.

Hi guys
I lost one set of my 2013 Volvo XC60 key/fob over the weekend and would ideally like a replacement. Any ideas on the best way to go about this? I contacted Volvo and its going to set me back $710.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Get a new key from Berry Motor Group and have a Volvo dealer code it. I did this for my V50, and a colleague did it recently for a 2010(?) XC 60. I think hers was a bit over $400 for key and coding

You could try
prvlocksmiths.com.au/ if in sydney

I really should sort my keys also. Look at this ridiculous monster..
jamesinc
Surely some epoxy will sort that out

I actually have a couple of new fob cases which includes the new spring mech.. Need to do the swap over.
kyril
Yeah I need a new case as the spring locking mechanism is shot in both mine. The bloody fob is ridiculously large without the actual key always out!

wonder if we can downsize to a newer and smaller fob. @Philia_Bear this possible?

I had a key cut for a 2004 XC90 for $57 at a locksmith in Port Lincoln. The key
opens doors but won’t start the car, in fact I was advised not to ever put the key in the ignition as it may cause major drama. You could lock the ignition key in the car and everyone have a door key.

I bought the black C70 through Mark at BMG, it only came with one set of keys.
As I flew down to Melbourne and drove it back to Wollongong, got it sorted up here.
After contacting every auto locksmith specialist story is this.
They can only programe Volvo truck keys which are chip number 46, Volvo cars keys are chip number 44.
Contacted Alan Mckay Volvo at Moss Vale, I've known them for over 20yrs, they sold me genuine volvo chipped key for about $180, I bought a genuine volvo 3 button remote privately $30.
Took car, key & remote up to dealership in Moss Vale over two separate occasions and got them programmed.
Had to pay software costs & labour.
Total cost all up $420.
Cheaper than calling road side assistance and tray top truck if I loose the keys.
Unfortunately there are no options as far as an ignition key goes as the keys chip talks to the cars immobilizer box and must be programed to the same frequency to be able to start the car.
