Hi can anyone tell me if towing a 400kg camper trailer in my 1983 240 gle 3 speed auto (121000lkm) will cause any problems I have a few trips planned one around 500km I took it out for the first time today and apart from being incredibly sluggish seemed ok but I'm sure fuel consumption will be a killer , any advise ?
Thanks Darren

Assuming it's been well maintained and everything is in good order, it'll do it fine, even if not particularly fast. :)

I'm always loading up my 240 and giving it a good workout. I haven't had any problems yet.
Today I had 3/400kg of dirt in the back of my wagon. Yesterday it was full of wood and a few weeks ago it was numerous trips with pavers. 240s love it!

Have towed 2 tons behind the 240 on multiple occasions
Swap the bw55 auto for a m45 manual
The efficiency will go up drastically and the towing is much easier

How much $ to change it to a manual ?

@Angus242164 can do it for you in Ballarat.

Rwd volvos are surprisingly good at towing heavy shit
N/a 944 towed a 740T on ~ 800kg of trailer fine
Sat on 110 in 4th and all

Not just Angus can do a manual swap ;)
If you change too a 4 speed auto you should also be fine for economy. 400kg isn't that much weight for 240s. People in europe tow over 2 tonnes with them. But normally turbo them to keep some pace. Factory tow limit is 1500kg for the car anyway.

Cost for manual conversion ?

Doing it yourself or someone else doing it for you?
Ex850R
I hazard to guess someone else Mike.

Not me someone else !

I know nothing mechanically but my brother and I were able to do a manual swap in his 240 in a day. Hardest thing was holding the auto box as we were taking it out and moving around under the car. I would definitely pay for someone with a hoist to help next time.
On the topic of towing, what style tow bars are available for 240's? I have one that the whole horizontal bar is visible at the back of the car but I don't want to install it just yet because it looks wrong, it's just so visible. There must be other options.

I got Angus to remove my tow bar when he did the manual conversion for me.
Vee_Que
That's the only option really. Back then they didn't do removable sqaure bar ones because people didn't mind how they looked. But its only two bolts holding the tongue on anyway!
