Hi - I am looking to buy a Volvo V70 - base model - naturally aspirated. I keep coming across second hand cars with numerous problems (especially automatic transmission failure - which, although apparently more common on the XC70, appears to affect quite a few V70s also). I am interested in recommendations as to the best year model(s) for reliability etc. Thanks.

^ This.
There are some parts around here to do a manual conversion easily if you are keen?

Basically avoid anything with a 5 speed geartronic transmission unless you want to throw money at the transmission and get it rebuilt.
That 5 speeder was found on every P2 series V70 and XC70, from years 2000-2008ish. It was also found on the P80/P1 series in the year 2000 and only in the year 2000.
The now older model years (1999-2002) in naturally aspirated form can be affected by a faulty Electronic Throttle Module. Make sure it has been replaced with the newer version which doesn't fail. It's quite an expensive fix.
My tip would be either a 1997/98 V70 with the cable throttle and 4 speed auto. I have one and it's great. 850's are fairly reliable. Or blow the budget and buy a 3 gen. P2 series is good if you can find a manual but lol good luck. I have a P2 series XC and it the motor has been very reliable. The rest of it? Like gearbox, suspension, radiator and so on? Not so much...

Despite having the etm I much prefer the 99
The little sister has the exact car your after and its amazingly reliable

Yeah once you fix the ETM the 99's are good to go, cos 4 speed auto. I here the 99's drive nicer than the 97 and 98s

Not as nice with an electric throttle.

I had a December 1999, 2000MY and reg V70 with the 5 speed manual, it ended up going to the scrap yard with 225,000 miles. I got the ETM clean and software update at 173,000miles. Didn't have a problem with it at all I those 50,000 miles/3 years.

Guy in Melbourne does the ETM fix cheaper than Xemodex remanufactured ones.
He is on this forum rarely but can be found through a few sources.
May be in the Vic Volvo Club?

I have a 97 and it blew the 4speed tranny. I converted it to manual and its been fine since. The T5s are definitely the one you want. NAs are stupid.

Paul , thinking about your bad fuel consumption , the things I mentioned are listed in a post on here James put up about poor fuel economy and one thing stands out , catalytic converter blocking or worn out.
The other things all contribute as well.
Basically these cars reach an age and need things replaced as any car does. Mileage is no indicator if low as time wears parts out , poor maintenance as well.
Your V70 may be saveable , you know the car , if it doesn't need much else it may be worth keeping?
If and there one comes along you will need to do all the "stage 0 " items anyway to have a good base to start from.
Basically get all the service kits from FCP Euro or PFS UK , timing gear and water pump/adjusters kit. Oil separator kit.
Front struts and all steering component kit , etc etc. See one of the peeps on here up your way for a helping hand to installed it all?

2004 V70 Akitva. I found the issues are a lack of tranny oil changes and the wrong tranny oil .
As well a cooler helps as well as a line filter .
Manuals as much as I love them are a lot of work in Melbournes traffic .
I dropped my tranny oil 3 times then a full line flush so my oil is now clean and filtered and cooled .

On an auto, its not is it going to fail, its when that's a fact, I have a mate that has a 80k V70 akitva as well and its on the second valve body now, $2800 later. Plus if you do a tranny flush right it should take 8 litres including the flush do one every 50k unless its tuned do at 35-40k
