Hi There
Recently found out that the rear wheels are not engaging when front looses traction on my Volvo XC70. I work in the snow fields at Mt Hotham ski resort and previous years the old girl cruises up the hill in all conditions, often before the snow clearers have even cleared the way I am the snow plough ! However this season just in an inch of snow or ice there were times when I actually thought we were not going to make it up the mountain ! I also noticed when you would expect the rear wheels to engage a loud screeching noise !
I have an awesome Volvo mechanic in Albury and he has advised me that it could be that the software needs re-collaborating, he thinks the front wheels are not communicating with the back wheels ? Sounds like common sense to me, however was wondering if anyone out there had come across this problem ????

Hello! Welcome.
Is there not a Volvo dealer you can take to for software updates?
@jonbot is a Volvo Tech , he can help here.
Vee_Que
Angle is/has failed I'm guessing.

Do these not have a clutch rather than the viscous diff of the older AWDs?
I dint want to mention the angle gear....

Pretty sure this as well
Philia_Bear
also the angle gear fails in 3 ways
1. coupling between diff and gear strips out
2. press fitting between gear and shaft fail so gear spins on shaft
3. haldex system fails

Hi There
Thanks for all your help everyone,
Snoopy : The plan is my guy will take the car to Volvo in Albury next Friday as he doesn't have the computer equipment. In the past I have always taken my Volvo's to Volvo. That was until I lived in the high country where there are no Volvo dealerships. I actually found a guy so obsessed with Volvo's, his services are so anal that I felt when he checked the car he understood Volvo's more than your average guy working in a Volvo service dealership so very happy with him.
Vee_Que : I don't know what an angle is sorry, I am afraid I am one of those guys that would not know one end of an engine to the other, just love Volvo's, please advise what is an angle ?
AshDVS : not sure what you mean, could that be spam type email ?
Philea Bear : Sounds like you know a thing or 2, or 3. My car is the last of the previous shapeXC70, 2005 model. I bought it with 28k's on the clock and babied it as far as servicing, still only 108k's on the clock. With regards to your comments, my thoughts are see if there is a computer software issue as that only costs $180.00. But considering the screeching I am braced for something worse, like coupling between diff and gear striped out.
O No
Doesn't matter will always love my Volvos

Simple and quick test
Lift the rear of the car off the ground
Make sure the car is in park
grab the drive shaft (that goes front to rear) near the engine and see if it will turn
if it turns without the front wheels turning its an instant indicator that the angle gear has failed (pic above)
(putting upwads of 50ft-lbs of torque while trying to turn it is fine)
If its solid, then its either the clutch system at the back or the software or both
software side is pretty rare, but plugging the car into a real VIDA unit might give you some answers
The failing of the Bevel gear and or coupler is really common and is not related to good or bad maitenance
The parts were simply not designed well until 2007+

Hi Philea Bear
Thanks so much for taking the time, really appreciated. I will mention these things to the mechanic when I take it in for the software check next Friday, apart from that the car purrs along great and still feels new.
With regards to your point that the parts were not designed well until 2007 +, do you know anything about the All Wheel drive systems in the XC90, I would quite like to have 7 seats for the kids ETC, I was thinking about getting one that's a few years old next year when Volvo release the new shape as I think they may come down a bit in price ??
Cheers Rob

Same deal and more issues with the 90.
Mark at Berry's is reporting yaw sensors as well as the 6 spd auto being repaired.
Maybe the last of them better?
RobFord
I have been heard that the pre 2007 T6 models had severe transmission issues but havnt heard anything bad about the AWD systems ?

Hello,
For those of you that may be interested the car went in to Volvo today and the prognosis was not good.
Unfortunately as it turns out the rear wheels were not engaging is because the coupling has failed not a computer issue. This is a 2006 XC70 with 108ks on the clock with a full Volvo service history. Apparently during this time Volvo were owned by Ford and to save money they used some cheaper parts.
The cost to repair with the upgraded Volvo part made 2007 onwards inc labour is approx. $3000.00, but waiting for written confirmation.
Anyone looking at buying any AWD Volvo XC70/90 with mileage between 100k's and 120ks should check this out as it is fairly common but Volvo don't like to talk about it.
Rob
It can be fixed a whole lot cheaper than that.
It is a shame you are so far away, would be happy to help you out with it.
CamZH
$3k ?
Ask for a break down on that if you can.
That part from FCP is about $110
Might want to service the angle gear while there, that's another $300 for the fluid and seals.

The good news is that it is not a specialised volvo job so you could get any workshop that sees AWD stuff regularly to do it with parts ordered in from the US.
jonbot
i replaced the one in the S60 on a pit one arvo after work
easy enough job, angle gear isnt hard to get out
after 2006 the collar got a nitride coating that helps it last a whole lot longer
TF80SC in the 07 onwards stuff seems trouble free, as does the AWD, beyond the odd DEM pressure sensor, havent seen one in a good while though
as for pre 07, the 2.5T will likely see the same issue as the XC70, assuming it hasnt already been replaced with the updated part
the T6 with the 4T65 GM box can be helped a lot with the updated TCM software, i havent seen one fail with up to date software. still a thirsty doughy pig though, the 2.5T goes just as well and uses less fuel
