Dauntless
Hi guys,
I'm looking for a full set of brake hard lines and distribution block from a non-ABS 740/760.
If you have something suitable, please let me know. Thanks!
Philia_Bear
why?
also... i think the white car at your moms place is ABS free....
Dauntless
Because I want to remove the dodgy ABS from my 740T.
I didn't think of that, I'll take a look, thanks!
Philia_Bear
whats dodgy about the ABS system?
Dauntless
The ABS unit sends black grit into the lines, blocks them, and makes the car pull to one side. It also doesn't work properly when it activates, causing much longer braking distances than I'm comfortable with.
I could replace it with a used unit, or get rid of ABS. Personally I'd prefer the latter.

ABS is win in the rain.... the gold car has a good unit on it as another option

I just removed the relays. No pulling and blockages after that.

Thanks Alex, I hadn't considered that. Where are the relays located? I'll remove them at least as a temporary measure. Will this also disable the warning light on the dash?
I agree that ABS is good when it's a modern system and working properly, but in the 740 it pulses very slowly and reduces braking pressure to well below maximum effectiveness.
Also I passed my defensive driving course without ABS and with crap tyres, and none of my other cars (including the Forester) have ABS, so I'm not the average shitty driver in that regard.
I looked at fitting a later 940 ABS unit which is meant to be better, but it's not worth the effort and cost.

If you find one at a wrecker it would be worth it. Relays are under the plastic cover on the ABS unit. I'm not a fan of them either.

Thanks. Does that leave the warning light off or on?
I'd still like to remove it completely at some point though.

Just remove the bulb from the cluster if removing the relays causes the light to stay on.
I considered fitting ABS to my 760T, it wouldn't be hard to do as I already have a late diff and late front strut housings ready to accept the sensors, and I work for a brake workshop so I can make my own lines, but I found that the issues it had, like the rear stepping out under hard braking, all reduced a lot when I fitted better tyres.
