I have started the process of converting my broken auto v70 into a hopefully working manual v70. I sort of understand the process but being a 240 kind of man I am a little behind the times in terms of newer cars and their fancy pants electronics.
I have purchased an entire parts car with everything I need and yesterday I pulled out the engine and gearbox and today I will pull the master cylinder, pedal box and shifter. Before I pull my v70 apart is there anyone who can share some wisdom?
Thanks.

It is Sunday , go to church before you do anything.

Drop the front subframe, including the lower control arms, pull the cv's out. Disconnect the selector cables and starter, drop the gearbox. It really is as simple as that.
Make sure you fit the gear stick and cables and hydraulics while the gearbox is out.
Leave all of the auto engine bay wiring in place. Just unplug the harness at the trans and pull out the auto ECU. You will need to join up a couple of wires at the end to enable it to start and you will need to add in the wiring for the reverse lights. Pinch a plug from somewhere else on the donor car that fits on the reverse light switch (front indicator wiring I think is the same) it will need about a foot or so of wiring hanging off it. I will find where I wrote it down and post it up later.

Cheers Rob. Today I got the pedals out of the donor car as well as the manual shifter. I then got the auto shifter out of my v70 and the manual shifter in as well as the center console. So far its been easier than I thought.
I'm sure it will get harder.

Get thee to Church ! You can be saved!!
Sounds like a good job! How did you get access under car? Hoist ? Good big stands?
Slowbrick
I'm just using stands in the driveway. I will post some photos in a bit.

I found nothing particularly difficult. I had the most trouble with the clutch master cylinder, I ended up pulling out the dash so I could get it in.
Ex850R
And fix the dash mounts while you are there...
Rob
I didn't have that issue, managed to get the master cyl in ok.

I didn't have too much issue getting it out of the donor car with alot of extension. I'll remove the drivers seat for more access.

You can also use the manual loom from.the donor car to save any cutting of the auto loom, it splits under the ecu box 10mm bolt down the side and the whole box comes out and is easy to split and lay back out, you going to run an internal or external slave on the clutch?
Ex850R
^ Good one Jim!
Slowbrick
Most of the loom is gone so i will need to rig something up. There's the ring on the box for the slave but I think its an internal type. It has a little black thing on the throw out fork hole.
Rob
They all have the ring. Being a 98 it will be internal slave
Slowbrick
Is that better or worse?
Rob
Internal is better. The negative is that if it fails the gearbox needs to come out.
Slowbrick
Ah well I don't have an external one so internal it is.

Make sure you buy a.new one then as.rob says you really don't want to be taking the box off again if it fails

Thanks Jim. How likely is the slave to fail? I'm not planning on changing the clutch until next year as to be honest I don't have the money. I just want to get it up and running again so it can help us move house and when we settle down again ill look at getting all that stuff done.
