Hi am looking at buying a XC90 that has a gearbox that is faulty, nearly 200,000 klm it is a 2003 model. How much would a gearbox set me back and how hard are they to change over myself, any advice would be welcome (@Phillia_Bear) (@Rob)
In another post Mike stated the price for gearbox repair kit at around $800 from USA.
There would be a high premium on a good replacement , if you could find one at all......
The vehicle itself would have to be very cheap.
Ask Mark about what to pay , he may also have a vehicle with issues to sell too as he has 5 or 6 for sale as it is.
Yes thanks for that ,the more time I spend on google looking at gearbox issues with the XC90 the
less I think it is a good idea to own a early model

Once properly fixed and upgraded the boxes are a non issue
if your paying someone else to do the R&R and rebuild... its never going to be worth it

Finding a good 07+ D5 is not hard

sadly we never got the really good 03-06 XC90's which were the UK market T5 Manual FWD models
Bring UK fwd gearboxes in Mike????
The R&R is not to much of an issue it would be the rebuild that would be the problem
Any thoughts on someone to rebuild in Brisbane and how much??
Last time I asked around it was going to be about 1.5-2k if I supplied the parts kit
There is a shite ton of time in cleaning and putting stuff back together
Unless your getting the xc for under2k I would be looking at others that have already had the trans done once or more

Any XC is gonna need trans done if cheap. If you can get it real cheap , tell them $4K+ to fix , good deal. Or as Mike says , get one that's fixed.
