I think the AW70 was the norm starting from '83, on GL's and GLE's.

If you have a overdrive button, you have a 4 speed auto. Timing is a key thing.

Definitely get the base timing set right. Also make sure the vacuum advance is connected and working.

I will re-do the timing next, my engine did not have timing markings, so I will double check my TDC and check again. I will look at the vacuum advance too.

No timing marks on the valve cover? Or none visible on the crank pulley?

The crank pulley. Last time I did it I used a bit of coat hanger wire in cylinder no.1 and a 17mm spanner to try and get TDC just right, I figure I should do it again to be extra sure, then I will be able to really tune it better. I used to just twist the dizzy manually, drive for abit, pull over, advance or retard, then drive some more until I was happy.
I know it was no the most proffesional, but not having a strobe light, it worked pretty well.
Now I have a strobe....
