I stil think a tiny carputer with a HDD for music store and stream internet radio as well is the best option. Leave the existing radio for radio till digital does that in and get some thing for the carputer to do radio with a tuner card. The thing has all the control for sound programmed and some nice amps , one for each pair of spkrs and one for a sub , ideal! Remote control too!

@Ex850R Don't bring up the carputer! That was my first idea. Still undecided. The Pioneer would be the easier option that's for sure.
This
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121058156106 has actually been on my radar for a while now. Since I have all the PC parts ready to go. Probably would be worth it. I've been having a good old look into it for a while and the USB GPS and TV/radio tuner dongles have come a long way. Was thinking of mounting a few USB ports on the dash somehow for some functionality...... All the ideas......

I had a pioneer double DIN unit in my old S70T5 with some old skool JBL 2 way 8" ish from the car radio dealer who has been around for 20-30 years in Warrnambool , he had them on the sound wall , never used , didnt have any stock , geez that pumped with an Earthquake amp just for the rears....The door rear spkrs were deleted. It turns out when i had to change the amp ( beware old skool amps you must have on ebay....) i looked into the wiring his offsider had done....mmm , not great so on further investigation they hadnt worked the fronts properly as the Volvo way of wiring is in series at the front to show 8ohm to the H/U and the rears i cant remember , check the many forum posts on this and use Volvo wiring diagrams to figure the spkr wiring. So i had to improvise , a crossover was really needed so thats why when i started to upgrade the speakers i decided 3-4 amps is the way..... Found a guy on ebay local who smashed his XR6T and had a few JL Audio amps and i found a Rockford Fosgate Punch perfect for the sub. I now need a car i am happy with to do the full monty on.....As i said , a carputer to run the audio , could be great with an audio program and i have a PC card for high end sitting just waiting for this i just realised!

That Raspberry Pi looks an interesting set up... just showed it to GF, now... how to config a GPS and mapping system...

how to config a GPS and mapping system...
I've actually been having a look into all that. And there are a few free and open source alternatives. I want to base the whole system if I do it on Linux (Windows alternative) so stumbled upon a few different ones like this

Dont flame the carputer!!! Was it you who answered my query about them ages ago on TB?
An ECS board , audiophile card with a stack of outputs for midi desk etc..... Does that get ou interested ?
I too like hardwire as bluetooth just chews your battery and would need a charge cord anyway so why not?
When are you making a program / OS for us to run on the Samsung panel???????
I want one!!!
Ex850R
Like Linux !
Any reports on the opengts ?

Had a look on one of the maps that was linked; it's missing a whole road I use, so that's an issue...

Damn it Snoopy. Stop talking dirty to me. It's making me want to buy that display, whip out my soldering iron, sort out the a car PSU and getting cracking with it!
I'm leaning towards one of the leaner Linux variants like Arch or Bang and getting something up and running based around that. Small solid state drive in the chassis with external hard drive in the glovebox is doable (whether eSata or USB - either or for mass storage). So you have a setup that can boot in 5-10 seconds quite easily and resume playback promptly too.
That was the plan. Touch screen shouldn't be an issue these days. Linux has enough drivers to make most things run on it. Redo the desktop to have large icons for 'Radio' 'TV' 'DVD' 'GPS' etc, easily accessible. If people are interested I could get a display, get an OS up and running to be somewhat decent and then image it for others to use.

There were a few others I found in my travels a few months ago. I'll see if I can dig them up. Anyone know of any Windows based alternatives too?

I dont mind using a GPS by itself ( i do need new one though as it was hidden under the seat and got squashed with the down button on the seat being used...)
I just hate them stuck to window so it would be good to be able to stream the voice from the phone GPS or perhaps use android and have Google Chrome and maps ?
That way you could look at the maps page and also use the directions voiced.
Surely touch screen drivers can be imbedded no matter the O/S ? No idea , am a dabler in puter stuff .......
Maybe i could get my bro-inlaw onto it , he is of the "can do anything if i put mind to it " type and as a professor of comp science and a keen interest in doing projects like a boffin would that others see as silly or boring he is the Man. Not a well Man though so his Triumph Spitfire / Toyota Corrolla twin can with very speccy brakes and coil-overs is taking his free time , i have to talk him into it and keep his spirit up to get shit done , works both ways for me i must say though.

Android?
Dont let us stop you from ordering thsoe touch screens , in fact , havent you done it yet????
K3FSAR
Actually Android based isn't a bad idea. I have a Raspberry Pi sitting here doing nothing at the minute. And the apps. All of the apps.
I'll get my credit card and tell my girlfriend the cats aren't eating for the next 2 months! I need a carputer!

How many cats to feed for that money?

Awesome! Raspberry Pi running Android does exist.<a href="Link">

I think you are onto something Snoopy.

2. One is a maine coon though (if you have no idea what that is, Google it.....)
You are really better off in my humble opinion getting a small ITX board with an inbuild CPU and passive cooling for durabilities sake and mounted in the double din unit. Either way, I'll order a screen and chassis tomorrow - I've got both the Rasperry Pi and a few ITX motherboards laying around here, so I can have a play and work out what would be best.
Ex850R
Will the Pi have enough grunt to run a proper sound card though? I am no fan of mp3 so it would neeed to run my large files of high bit rate music i want to do on the HDD on the system.
