GingerNinja Now that the weather is warming up a bit I'm thinking about polishing the old paint on my 240. It's obviously not a concours restoration, just trying to stop the paint coming off on my hands. Does anyone have suggestions for doing this? Which products to use? Thanks.
Ex850R I am thinking clay bar but maybe just a good cutting fluid , buy from an industry supply shop though , the German / Italian products are great. Maybe good old Turtle cut compound then wax even? Go and see Paul D and get him to show you how he would polish your car!?
GingerNinja Haha, thanks for the tips. I'll look into those. nickm;31630 wroteRed car? It's a white car so not quite as bad as old red ones. If I try to wash it the water just ends up white.
nickm wash- clay - cut - polish - seal. If the paint is oxidized you need to remove the top surface there is not much you can do if the paint is thin
Tzantushka Are you planning on polishing by hand or machine? Reason for asking is that will favour what products work best. Also, the paint on white cars is stubborn to get a good gloss by hand. Most white paints use titanium dioxide as a pigment which is extremely hard - so you'll need to choose an appropriate polishing compound. Plus, as Nicko mentioned, white paints can also be thinner than other colours so proceed with caution if you are using a machine (esp. a rotary buffer)
Vee_Que No need to bother with clay. Cut polish then wax will bring its life back. Happened with my 760. Clay seema to just make it smoother but very time consuming. Using the right cutter is important. Using a mid strength cutter from meguirs is what I'd go with.
