Hi everyone im quite new to this forum but i thought i would take some time to share my 1989 740 Turbo HP with the M46 Transmission. I have had this old girl for about 5 years now and only finally just got it on the road this year after many little issues that needed repairing.
I originally got this car with plans to drop the B230ft engine out of it to fit either a LS1 or 1JZGTE engine but have slowly turned away from that idea to hopefully build up the original engine with 310K on the clock she is still pulling quite well at 12psi when it wants to run good but then it seems to have its bad days which has so far led me too the replacement of the powerstage RSR, AFM and dizzy and a hell of a lot of re-wiring after finding melted wires and a recent ICM power issue, i have just recently started to upgrade the fuel system with a Bosch 044 for the inline pump and an 040 for the in tank so i have better fuel supply which it seems to be handling quite well i have many plans to come for this car including a respray which is desperately needed in some places and to complete an interior conversion which is half done going from tan to a red cloth.
Anyway as i move on ill have more to post on it progress over time.
once i figure out how to post photos ill put some up lol...

Welcome Mate, I am interested to see more, I too am mulling LS1/JZ swaps but starting to lean towards using the original engine.

Front
Missing the front fog lights i have one but been unable to find another
The rear covered in dust and grime alongside with one of my past projects.

Welcome!, that's a very neat 740HP, paintwork looks great as well, you're Black 740HP looks exactly like mine, I've got 267,000 on the clock, the manual tranny in mine is a bit tired, otherwise mines much the same as yours ;)

Thanks :) yeah i have noticed a couple of 740 hp's getting around the same colour as mine it needs a bit of respraying in the left rear quarter and boot but otherwise it just needs a good polish all over i wouldnt mind dropping the m46 out and looking at either a m47 or m90 as mine is a little tired also but still pulls great :)

Welcome! 740's are growing in numbers on the board now! I'm personally not a big fan of the m46/47 gearbox, but I also think 740's are a big car and an Auto is better suited to them if you really want to go fast (assuming I can keep my auto holding up long enough to get drag times!) There is plenty of potential in the engine to go a lot faster.
I've found the stock computers on these (LH 2.2) tolerate a fair bit but are not ideal once you get to a t3/4 hybrid turbo, a 3" exhaust is a must to do and with 2 straight through mufflers, it's not too loud compared with a 2.5" with one muffler and it makes more power.
Stock they should have something not far off the bosch 044, but my wagon now has one as well, which there is a thread on a bit further in RWD. Rebuilding the motor is a fun job. If it had to rebuild one for a 740T, I'd be finding a 93> 940 non turbo motor, fitting new pistons and drilling the block for a turbo return, measuring everything, assembling with a 90+ ported turbo manifold and fitting it all in replacing your current block. They do get long in the tooth and are sometimes just not worth machining vs the cost of another motor.

Would an m90 box be any better?
My next few plans were for the 3" exhaust im just pricing quotes at the moment on getting it done i have an exhaust shop across the road from my workshop but they charge an arm and a leg just to get a muffler done... ive been looking for suitable options when it came to rebuilding my B230 and from what you said that looks like quite a suitable option i also thought about doing a twin cam conversion to it but its just a matter of finding a doner or complete head and getting the pistons modified.

A t5 or toyota w58 conversion would be better note due to parts availability. The m90 doesn't exist in Australia.
Cj1992
Okay yeah that would make sense so any standard t5 out of a commodore would suit aslong as i change the bellhousing but would the input shaft also need to be changed?

There is a thread on this currently going to start local info. @Angus242164 has done the w58 conversion and it isn't too cheap. But you can learn from his mistakes.
Cj1992
Alright no worries , Thank you.

I've got a W55 in mine and it has pro's and con's, personally I wouldn't recommend it to anyone at this point in time, as the T5 swap is more straightforward and the required parts are cheaper and easier to get, even if T5's don't shift quite as nicely.
Back when I did it in '06, there were no off-the-shelf adaptors for T5's, and T5's were hard to get cheaply, so the Toyota box made more sense at the time.
