here is a photo of my M41 overdrive, speedo attachment end. My question is what sort of speedo cable is designed to attach to it. I am hoping to fit into my 120 rally car, and the standard screw on end of the cable will not fir this. I am wondering if this M41 should have an angle drive thing on it (since the output section is significantly longer than a normal output).

Any advice would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Richard.

I can see the speedo drive gear sticking out the back of the O/D, but.....

Wondering if these things from an Amazon usually have a bearing cage (p/n 380435) fitted to them, which goes over the speedo drive gear, and is held in place by the clamp.

There's a 'hat seal' (p/n 380192) which is the oil seal that sits inside this fitting on top of the speedo drive gear.

The threaded part of the bearing cage takes an M18 x 1.5 fitting.

Thanks Major Ledfoot,

That certainly looks correct. I have looked for the part on the internet, and find that Nordicar (Netherlands based company) has them listed. I will order one ASAP. Problem solved..

Many thanks for your sharp and concise answer!!

The end of the cable should be the same as the M40. That plate is designed as a retainer to hold the cable in place. The cable is simply longer than the M40 and BW35.

Try calling John at Voldat, he will likely have one.

I finally got around to working on the M41, upgrading the internals of the gearbox so that it is now a close ratio version of the M41. I used an original R sport gear set that I picked up a while ago.

Regarding the speedo issue, I finally solved that problem as well.

Here are some pictures of the insert that goes into the rear of the overdrive unit...

The one that was originally in the transmission (top photo) was the one on the right. I found the left one in another J-type overdrive (it was actually part of an M46). Not sure what year it was off, but fitted perfectly, and allows direct fitment of the standard end of a 122 speedo cable. I had another M46, but it was off a later 240, and the hole was blanked off ('87 model I think).

Now I have a pair of J-type M41's for my 122 rally car, one standard 3.13 ratio first gear box, and this one with the 2.62 first gear, which should work well with the 4.88 rear end.

Now to get yet more work done on the rally car (separate thread).
