WTB GEARBOX AW71L

Want to replace my 240 wagon auto trans ... slipping in reverse (where do I get the service instructions from?)

If I can find old of a 940 auto box ...

Cheers GF Wollongong

what about how to restore the overdrive solenoid? literally. Currently blanked off.

Is it low on fluid which lets the pump suck air due to all the fluid moving forward under reverse?

when was its last service?

as for the overdrive solenoid, you need a new one, it’s easy to replace, comes with new wiring so plug in and play

Thanks for reply.

Trans fluid is fine - up to correct level and is new.

Filter and gasket done about 4 mths ago.

If I can fix it I'm keen to try - but don't want it off the road for too long. Is there instructions regarding how to go after this. I'll have to admit to being "competent amateur" level mechanically and am familiar with the solenoid transmissions in Fords ... well at least the solenoids can be removed and renewed. Not sure how the 240 trans works.

If there is air in the system ... is there any way to bleed it, in addition to what I've done?

I'm assuming FCP for the solenoid. My end goal is that the car is largely stock throughout (suspension enhancements aside) and running well.

Thanks

The overdrive solenoid in the AW70 is external and mounted on the left side directly above the pan

two M6 bolts retain it and the wiring loom to the switch needs disconnecting

you will need two new sealing rings (if the solenoid doesn’t come with them, I have them)

very simple to replace but do make sure to thoroughly clean the side where the solenoid fits as you don’t want foreign objects falling in the hole

as for the slippage in reverse, that could be the worn clutch plates, which usually equates to an overhaul. I still believe there is a chance your fluid level is low, so you might want to add around half a litre of fluid and try it again

let me know if you need the o-rings or any further assistance, can call if that makes explaining easier

The Oz Volvo Technical Archive has the AW7x rebuild Green Book, in 3 glorious parts.

I guess its getting to the point now where we're going to have to start reconditioning these transmissions instead of swapping a different one in.

thanks for the replies...will add another 500ml - over filling can't make it worse. Will get in contact if no joy.

Then a wander into the archive...who knows what rabbit holes await.

thanks

GF

Also, how does it shift? Paying attention to the shift quality with the fluid hot, get back to us with the firmness of each shift 1-2 2-3 under load going up a steep hill

that’s a pretty good indicator of the state of the clutches, a stall test is good too (foot brake on and open throttle) paying attention to RPM attained, this also tests the stall converter
