Engine running but oil warning light still on

G'Day everybody from.Tassie!!

So my never ending story of my 1996 850R. Engine rebuilt. It's finally running but oil pressure light stays on. I forgot to prime the engine and even the oil filter (I know guys!!!) Had it briefly running hoping it would build up pressure. Then I took my brake pressure bleeder and pumped engine oil through the pressure sensor hole into the engine (between 1.5 and 2 bar). Turned the engine over by hand while it the pressure bleeder was pumping oil through the engine. Primed the oil filter as well. Started it up while I still had pressure on the bleeder. Engine sounds rough now. I was able to see at the top (when I removed the filler cap) that there was oil coming out so it must have gone through the engine. Oil level is on Max now.

I will put the oil pressure sensor back in tomorrow and hope it finally builds up enough pressure.

Any advice what else I could do?

Why was the engine rebuilt?

What was done to the oil pump (if anything)

It's very possible the oil sender is just dead... using a trusted gauge would be best

hello guys and thanks for your input!!!!!

The engine was rebuild because I had 2 rodknocks and the cylinders were totally tapered and worn out

I took the oil pump apart, inspected it and put it back together. There were no wear visible on the pump, no pitting or anything and the engine had at least 250 000 ks on it (odometer stopped working at some stage)

I checked with a multimeter. I get an open circuit when sender is without pressure and when I blow compressed air in it, the circuit is closed so the diaphragm inside seems to be working.

I read somewhere that could be that the o-rings in the pan are not properly installed. I changed them as well but cant see how you can fit them wrong.

oh I have a compression tester kit and will use that to see how much pressure I actually get

Re O rings in pan, always double up on the pickup one, it's an old trick and well used on a new build for exactly the reason you stated

Take the ols O ring to your local bering supplier and purchase a replacement thats made from VITON and is slightly thicker.

Hope you get it all sorted! Mine was 6 years until it was on the road problem free.

The O ring for the pickup if that managed to roll over during install it may be sucking air/oil instead of just oil. While your there a good clean of the pickup, which im sure was done anyways.

Really hope it's something simple like that, you have put alot of time and effort in.

Yeah Steve I ve got the feeling it is the o-ring/ Well at least there is progress...the beast is running now. Yeah I ve cleaned everything and blew it out with compressed air mate

I will report back when I ve got a new O-ring.

So yesterday I replaced both O-Rings and checked the O-Ring on the pick-up pipe. O-Ring on the pick up pipe is fine and I didnt have another one to double it up so what I did (not recommended) is I took some putty and worked it in that recess of the pick up pipe to see if I can get it air tight. The new O-Rings for the pan where not original ones but I am sure they fit. I glued them in place with some superglue so I wouldnt push them out of the machined O-ring groove. Unfortunately I either did not have anaerobic sealant so I took RTV gasket maker for the oil pan. The oil I am using for the rebuilt engine is 5W40 full synthetic oil. Is anyone using the same oil here?

I started the car up and oil warning light still stays on.

What I do next is:

I ordered 2 oil pan sealing kits so I can double up the oil pick up tube seals

Will use 10W40 mineral oil

Get anaerobic sealant

And use the correct O-rings for the pan

I couldnt find the correct torque settings for the oil pan bolts. My Hays manual doesnt have these settings

This Oil warning light is a pain in the arse......I hope it will be ok after the new parts are back in.

I think I will do as Martyn said and get a slightly bigger one made out of Viton
