Would anyone know where I could get a alternator to suit a 73-74 144 deluxe for a decent price? Preferably one that'll suit a B20A if that helps, thanks!

Do you have the old one? They're rebuildable

Yes I do, do you know what the cost might be for a rebuild?

You may send it to me for a diagnosis and repair quote

A few years back I had a Bosch alternator from a B20 that had the guts out of a Commodore alternator in it. The front casing was Volvo/Bosch and the rest was from a VN commodore which, I think, made it a 65 or 85 Amp alternator. It looked original, all bolted up without modification and the only wiring difference was the connector on the back for the low tension wires was different. I think it had a plastic plug rather than a spade terminal.

The other difference was an internal voltage regulator, which is a good improvement on the remote one.

The alternator in question is long gone so I cannot check it though it looked like a great solution. Your local auto elec can probably help you here. They would also be able to rebuild it as they are fairly simple to rebuild, so long as no major problems.

If someone has already swapped their alternator from the 35 amp model to something more useful that can run incandescent fog and driving lights, I'd be interested to know what model you're using. TIA

Found some old pics of that alternator.

dmc The clean out continues, more added and more photos Cleaning up workshop and have some parts left over. All parts available for pickup in Melbourne or some can be posted. 1kg Aus Post bags are $13. ##140## LHD (imported from USA) 1974 140 brake booster mount. This was procured to relocate the brake booster to where it really should be (directly in front of the brake pedal) and free up space on the intake side for a B230 in a 140. Also the adjustable rod to connect the pedal to the booster. There are two of them, $150 each. Can post via post bags. Yoshifab engine mounts to put a B230 into a 140. New, unused. $100 Can post. Modified (not by me) alternator for 140/B20 The part number of the main body is a commodore so almost certainly an 85 Amp alternator. Pick up only, too heavy to post. M40 gearbox. Needs bearings though shifted fine. $100 pick up only. 142 rear door trims (where the door would be if they were doors). PIck up only. $40 142 rear windows, seals and the lock mechanisms. Pick up only. $100 142s engine pipe, the really long one without the centre muffler. $10 pick up only. 3 wheels only, one sold. 140 15" wheels. Rims straight, tyres very old - one is a Michelin XZX! Probably fit 160 too. $40 for the three, pickup only. ##240## Manual pedal box with clutch master cylinder. 1991 240 high mount radio and amplifier (the amplifier is behind the lower part of the console). Has a code. Can post. $100 plus postage. 240 Beige door trims and handles etc. Removed from my car when electric windows went in. $100 the set ##740## Lights from a 740 wagon. Front in good shape, rears are one very good and one Ok. Brake set from a 90 model with ABS. Came off a running car, it was driven into the workshop (to become an engine donor). They all worked fine and were serviced by Voldat for many years. 4 rotors (22.0mm and 9.4mm which is legal), 4 callipers, 4 flexible hoses, with pads, and bolts. Also ABS sensors for front two wheel hubs included. $150 740 turbo transmission oil cooler. I assume this will work on any 740 auto. Would probably fit a 240 auto without much effort too. $20 pick up only due to hard lines. 740 intercooler. $10 pickup only.

Thanks mate, love that you included the model number, will make it easier to track one down.

    glad it helped.

If you can find an alternator of a later model injected 144 , they ran a higher amp alternator.

    35 versus 55amp if I recall ,
