92 240 Tow hitch but missing Ball tongue

As the title suggests, my 240 has a tow hitch but the flat bar Ball tongue is missing.

Has anyone had any luck finding a tongue? Im guessing it unlikely the 2 mounting bolt holes spacing is to a standard. Anyone got a random surplus tongue they can run a tape across the holes?

I will take measurements tomorrow.

Thanks gents, I keep forgetting to measure the bolt hole spacing.

Note Wayne said flat bar, meaning the strong steel bar Tongue (and ball) that protrudes out from the towbar mount is flat, whereas the older (or other) common towbar type mount face is made with about a 20 deg upward angle. Therefore the tongue has a completely different orientation.

Looks like the tow bar might be a genuine Volvo unit, or made for Volvo Australia locally. The plate has part numbers, but It isnt accessible enough to read.

The tongue looks to have the following dimensions, based on the mounting plate.

3" wide x 6" long (flat

mounting surface)

The 2 mounting holes have a 4" spacing and are likely 1/2"

The tongue looks to have the following dimensions, based on the mounting plate.

I would bet on 100mm and M12/M14 over anything SAE?

I would bet on 100mm and M12/M14 over anything SAE?

My initial thoughts were same as yours expecting metric measurements.

I measured the mounting hole spacing with my digital calipers as best I could, from leading edge to leading edge of each hole and its just over 100mm. I switched to imperial and it came out closer to 4" than 100mm.

My theory is the design of the tow bar, if made locally is from the pre-metric era and the maker would have been busy making tow bars for Fords and Holdens. The 240 is a 92 but I cant say the same for the tow bar. When did the Australian auto industry move to metric?
