clinton Hi guys, I have done a few CVs on x70 cars, but my C70 seems to take the cake. I did the left side about 6 months ago, and it was 'glued' into the spline with a resin like compount. Took a hell of a beating to get it out, I actually ended up buying a bigger sledge hammer. I scraped all the glue off before reinstalling and it came out much easier second time. Now I am doing the right hand side, and the same thing. It is stuck in the hub and I cant get it to budge. I might pull the hub and all out and try to press it out. My old s70 and v70 were far easier to get out of the hub, some axles more or less slid out, where others need helping. Has anyone else come across this? Is this 'glue' from the factory or was I just lucky?
timbo Its pretty common for them to be seized in the hub. You can try loosening the hub nut and carefully driving it a short distance as this can get them to work free. My car was so bad I took the whole hub off and pulled the inner CV off then slid the new boot on but if you are replacing the whole joint you might need a hydraulic press
clinton Cool, thanks. Did you have any resin like substance on the splines holding them in? That seems to be my problem with this car. PS: I have done several CVs (including on other cars). They are often a but stuck in the hub, but this is a whole different sort of stuck. I have resorted to belting the axle with a sledgehammer, as I initially damaged the threads and have a spare axle anyway...
CamZH I had this issue on my old 850. I finally got the axle out after lots of pounding, but the pounding destroyed the wheel bearing ! I dont know of any tricks. My current 850 had no issues on the recent boot change (only did the drivers side) However I did attempt to take the drive nut off with a rattle gun, maybe the rattle helped break the splines free ? Ended up having to use a breaker bar to get it undone.
Philia_Bear bush mechanics or something.... On some of the later cars you do do it because the splines are a little on the sloppy side For the pre 99 cars... never seen it as an issue
jaykenneally On my V70 they were tight but they came out alright with a bit of a push. The ones on the 850 were fairly stuck though like I think they may have been glued. Had to hammer the crap out of them in order to get them out and then that tore up the threads. Ended up just buying new ones for the V70 haha.
clinton When I eventually get this one out, I will try to take photos of the glue. It is like a resin that is quite brittle. Hard to see, but actually not too hard to get off if you manage to get the splines out first :-)
egads (she/her) Too much thread lock? The OEM kits come with thread lock to put in the splines but it is red.
clinton Finally got the second one out, I had to use a propane torch and may have damaged the hub... But it is out at least! Here is a pic of the 'glue', note the black strip of gunk on the spline. Whatever it is, it is now brittle so easy to get off.
