Left Parkes this morning and when we were approaching Canberra the engine decided to run very fast. It was during a 40km work zone. The engine was trying to do about 4,000rpm in top gear and I was holding it back with the brakes!
I pulled over and took the car out of gear and was forced to turn it off to stop it running at top speed.
I restarted the car and it was OK after that. It felt like the cruise control was running (previously it was used at 100kmh) but it wasn't engaged.
Any ideas about what caused this?

Stuck idle motor. Tried unplugging it and restarting?

Where would I find that on the engine?

Should be somewhere near the intake. It will have two small pipes going in and out. Im not sure on a 960 but most look like that. Unplug the pigtail not the pipes and see what happens.

the cruise control is vac based and has a big bit with a wire that pulls back on the throttle real
2 possibilities are
1. Spool got stuck for whatever reason...
2. Vac valve in the cruise module (pass side frame rail area) is going
The IAV is unlikely as it does not operate unless throttle is under 10% open

I've seen #1 happen lots for many different reasons
if its #2 its going to become very regular

Thanks Guys, I'll have a look in the morning.
It hasn't happened again but I haven't used the cruise control since.
