Olga, my recently acquired 1996 960 has a sunroof fitted but it seems to be very noisy. At highway speeds there is a lot of wind noise.
It seems to be functioning correctly when it opens and closes although a bit shuddering near the end of the retraction. It seems to be sealing OK as there has not been any water getting in when it rains but it is very noisy.
For comparison, I have a sunroof in my 740 which is much quieter when closed. The 960 has one of those glass roofs whereas the 740 has a solid (opaque) one.
On reading some of the discussions on the net it may be that there is some adjustment needed or the seals may be replacing. How do I determine this?

Maybe lube them to get the rubber back to shape ?
OldnDecrepit
I've lubricated the tracks with white lithium grease and I will try cleaning the rubber seals and the areas they seal against as maybe there's sufficient dust build up to stop it seating properly.
Today I was going to try using some masking tape over the seals to test if there is an air leak.
Ex850R
There must be a lube that 'plumps' the rubber , swells it back to what it should be but I guess you don't want dirt to accumulate there , if it is possible to re invigorate the seal then clean it would save new seals. Maybe a sunroof place can make the seals?

Just had a closer look while trying to clean the area around the sunroof. It looks like the rear of the roof is not going up as high as it should. Time for a tape test.
Ex850R
Is it mechanism ? But you lubed it all? Weird. .
OldnDecrepit
Yes, it's all lubed but it may have been dry for so long that the seal doesn't quite seal any more.
Just finished testing. I put a strip of masking tape over the rear of the sunroof and there was a dramatic reduction in wind noise. Added more tape over the sides and front and there was a further reduction.
So it looks like it's not seating properly, most probably because the seal needs replacing. Sigh, more expense.

Try one from Mark second hand wrecks if they have it? If its been garaged it should be good?
OldnDecrepit
Do you mean just the seal or the whole sunroof?

How hard is it to remove the seal? Maybe remove and soak in something to expand and rejuvenate them a bit.
Ex850R
Seal.

I had to remove the sunroof on my V70 to fix the seal, it was leaking in one place, but had enlarged in another and jammed the sunroof shut, which also needed the oiling of the century to get unstuck. Anyway, removing it was a tad difficult, you have to remove the roof lining and everything else up there to get to it, plus the thing weighs a tonne, plus I'm not even sure how you really remove the seals, i managed to fix mine with a bit of heat gun and some persuasion!

This guy has great videos on car repair and has done sunroof on his ( 850T5R or 850R ) car , ask him , an ex aircraft mech , explains the jobs well!

On the metal 760 sunroof the linkages also get stiff. Make sure you Lube them. I think there is adjustment in them if the rear isn't raising flush. Does the tilt work right?
OldnDecrepit
Yes I think I have lubed all the relevant areas. It shudders a bit near the end of the opening cycle. It tilts up and down fine but it still mustn't be sitting flush if there is wind noise. Not getting any water in the car so if there is water getting past the seal it must be draining OK.

Trying to find a replacement seal is proving challenging - Volvo and several O/S website show it as a discontinued part.
