Wanted: Brake Servo for 74 144

Hey Guys,

I am looking to see if anyone has a new or reconditioned brake servo for a 74 144 they'd like to sell before I start ordering something. I'd need it to be posted to Canberra or can collect in Sydney this weekend. Thanks

I’m using a 240 double diaphragm one on my 1974 144 rally car. IIRC I had to lengthen the pushrod and maybe make a new hard line to the distributor block. My brake lines are a bit modified, but you can see how it looks. A booster from a 240 might be easier to source.

I’ve attached a couple of photos: best I could find in a hurry.

Oops: I’ve just realised the first photo is a 144 single diaphragm booster. The one without an engine is the 240 booster.

I can get one new for about $600, but wanted to see if anyone had anything before I commit to it.

My 74 145GL and Dad's 74 144 GL both had the larger servo, which I think was also on the 164. They both stopped better than my 144DL ever has. But apparently they're NLA.

I’m currently in America and just had a look on US eBay. Plenty of new 240 servos here that ship cheaply to Australia, although you do need to check shipping cost. It ranges from under $40 to $350! USD! Not genuine Volvo, I think.

@paul0075 - Before you order a booster, check to see if you need the 60mm or 80mm spacing for mounting the master cylinder. There are two types -

1212406 master cylinder has 80mm spacing between the 2 bolt holes

673766 master cylinder has 60mm spacing between the 2 bolt holes

Brake booster p/n 1387640 from Skandix has 80mm spaced studs.

Brake booster p/n 1206727 is the 60mm one and Skandix shows it as discontinued.

Hi Paul, I probably have something second hand .... Sitting for 10-20 years dry, but condition unknown now. Also a chance of the Gl version. The 164 is different again.

The brakes place in Adelaide reconditions them well, but looking at about $600 for a booster rebuild from my last experience. The rubber bellows is a gamble at this age for any used one.
