Can anyone assist with 2 answers please on 93 Model 240.

My 93/240 has the mountings for the ABS module but no unit. .Did that year come with ABS or was it an option, and can the ABS unit be retro fitted from may be a 740 module?

Secondly did the 1993 year offer a GLE model, the original purchase documents say it was a GLE but some of the previous years GLE goodies are not there.?

thanks

Kelly

ABS is an option on the latest models

They weren't really badged as GLE more just 240 but the GLE parts were included

I wouldn't fit ABS to a car that doesn't have it, huge task

What’s the VIN - is it a MY93 (VIN would have P as the date code letter (1992 would be N) - look at the 9th digit I believe. Some people say the 240GLE was not offered in 1993, but I have a 1993 240GLE wagon (B230FX engine, leather, cross-lace alloy wheels, plush velour door panels, power windows, power heated mirrors, etc)…and have seen at least one other with same specification, so I believe at least on the wagon it WAS sold in AUS as a GLE in 1993…possibly early MY93, but then cancelled in late MY93 and just sold as “240” with optional power windows (but the door panels would not be the plush velour “GLE” fabric - they’d be the woven fabric, and there are no heated power mirrors, leather, could possibly have power windows though). Sorry I digress, but seeing some pics of your door panels, interior, knowing the stuff on it. Can you send a pic of the ABS mountings you’re talking about? I’ve never seen a 240 in Australia with ABS, but I have heard there MAY have been some here with ABS. Does your car have an airbag? More info please as it would be needed to help out. I doubt you would want fit a 740 ABS module to the car as I assume they have different programming/valving to suit the 740s brake system…but it might physically fit. The ABS cars do not have the split triangular braking system, so the brake lines and front calipers and likely master cylinder are all different.

thanks Ramrod and Greg for feedback on ABS /93/240/GLE?

Retro fitting ABS is probably a no go after your comments and some research.

Been told ABS was offered on some last wagons but not sedans in 93?

My car has P in the vin and airbag. Door trim/seats are plush Trico charcoal weave/elect windows./FX engine

Seems like Volvo specked up the 93 model in the final year and may not have offered a formal GLE .

Original dealer sales note says car was a GLE but now think think this an error.

Thanks for your assistance

Kelly

Your car could be a GLE based on features, Do you have power mirrors, leather seats ( Not all 1980's GLE had leather, some had velour seats, may have been the case for post 1990 GLE too) and the woodgrain trim pieces on the dashboard? What GLE features do you believe are missing?

If I recall correctly, a 1993 240 could have an Airbag or ABS, you could not select both.

In 1993 there were no GL or GLE models they were all just called 240. See bootlid badge

Some people call them 240 classic

They had the GLE parts fitted as standard. Alloy wheels, leather, power windows and woodgrain dash trim, stainless and chrome exterior trim parts changed for black

Airbag optional

I really wouldn't bother going to the trouble to fit a 30 year old ABS system. I hated the ABS in my 90 745T and actually wanted to delete it. The time and money would be better spent doing a defensive driving course and practicing hard braking without ABS.

(Most of) what Dauntless said. Retrofitting ABS would be an expensive hassle. Defensive driving courses are worth every cent and your money is better spent on one.

(My 745's ABS system was okay, though).

    Not sure about expensive

Parts are mostly common between 2 and 7 and 9 for 91+ builds

Importing the abs struts from the USA would be the only pain part...

How much would you charge to fit ABS to a 240 for example? (if you have all the parts necessary)

Drive in - Drive out with working ABS

I don't do paid work any more

When I ran my own shop... 4-6 hours assuming all parts supplied and the struts had already been swapped

I did retrofits to a few older 242/244/245's that had had lh2.4 swaps done

I can post the wiring diagram later but its pretty simple

Your right the infrastructure is there but not executed for Aust market (likely a Volvo Aust decision at the time based on extra cost).

Quite a project to undertake. Especially given the so many years gone past, plus who knows if the first abs version was any good as there is so many updates since.

Would be better off fitting bigger brakes via quality calipers etc. better bragging rights and looks.

Its a 3 channel abs system, its as good as pretty much any modern system

Sans significant upgrading in wheels and tyres and suspension and driver training, abs is better
