  • WTB 240 rear axle assembly. 3.31:1 ratio

Wanted to buy: 240 rear axle. 3.31:1 ratio.

Gidday people,

I was wondering if anyone had one of these lying around. I realise they're pretty uncommon and there's not that many of them around, but thought I would try my luck here.

I live in Redcliffe, QLD. So within 500km I could come and pick it up anytime. Further away though, freight. Not sure if that would be practical or not...

Thanks heaps in advance,

Ken.

3.31 a common ratio in a 940 so changing the centre into a late 240 diff is the extreme option.

That said the most recent 240s are the most likely to have the fuel economy diff ratio.

If you have not experienced this ratio in a 240 before don’t rush because it means noticeably slow acceleration.

As far as I'm aware the only car that was fitted with 3.31 ratio was the manual 240

Of all the 940's I've owned they all had either 3.73 or 4.10 ratios

The automatics need shorter gearing for they would never take off up a hill if you put 3.31 ratio in one

Anyway, to answer the OP question, I have the centre of a 3.31 axle available

Thanks for the replies Anthony and Ramrod,

I'm after the taller 3.31 ratio because I have done a ls3/tr6060 swap into my '88 240 sedan. At the moment with the 3.73 gears, 1st is too short with the huge flywheel effect and massive torque increase. I usually take off from the lights in 2nd, so it's sort of like driving a dogleg 1st 5 speed around with a super low 1st, if that makes any sense... 6th is tall enough at the moment, it's a .57 overdrive, the engine doing about 1800rpm @ 100km/h.

With the taller diff, I'm hoping a normal corner would be nice in 2nd rather that at the moment with 3rd being too tall and 2nd too short.

Also taking into account the rolling diameter of a VFSS Commodore with 245/45/18 tyres and a 3.7 rear gear compared to 195/65/14 tyres with 3.73 gears in my Volvo, that's about an 11% difference. The difference between a 3.37 and 3.31 ratio is about 12%. So pretty close. Also, The Iced Vo-vo is about 400kg lighter than a VFSS, so should be easy to pull the taller gear.

Ramrod, you say you have the centre of the 3.31 axle, do you mean you have the crown wheel and pinion with the centre (open centre/carrier), the bit that the crown wheel is bolted to? That could be an option for me as I want to fit a trutrac centre eventually. Where are you located?

I have read differing info on whether I have a 1030 or 1031 rear end and the different sizes of crown wheel and pinions between the 2 different types. I've read that the later 240s with the electric speedo pickup are all 1031s even though they have the single rib housing. Can anyone clarify this?

Thanks again,

Ken.

There should be a white label hidden beneath the undercoating of the left axle tube, scrap off the black tar and you’ll find it. That should tell you the axle type, ratio and part number but if it’s the factory fitted unit with electronic Speedo in your 1988 model it will most definitely be a 1031 type.

i have a complete centre with 3.31 gears inside it, not yet ready to part with it yet but I will be soon. Located in castle hill nsw

I once passed up a 1993 240 diff with 3.31, however, what was the desirable feature was it had toothed wheels on both axles.

How so, late ones had abs on the front wheels, but Aust spec models didn’t come with the wiring for the rear, only the diff hardware. This is how the late great Gerry McCarthy explained it to me.

These days I would so like to obtain the axles from this model!!!!! (anti spin control via Haltech computer)

Well, I've established with the help of your page Anthony that I have a 1031 in my Volvo, so now it opens up options for me. Either a whole rear axle which could involve complications, handbrake cables, brake pipes and hoses, rotors, calipers etc. Or a ring and pinion set. Probably should put all new bearings and seals through the whole diff anyway.

Thanks for your help Anthony and Ramrod. If and when you decide to part with your 3.31 gears Ramrod, I'll be definately be interested.

Cheers.

Hey Ken,

I think I have a 3:31 diff installed in my 245 that I installed when doing an LH2.4 swap to get the speedo working. Ill have to check it to confirm when I have it out in the next month or two as part of an underbody resto. If it is then id probably let it go as im looking for a 3.73 or 4.10 to go with the 2.95 first in the T5 trans I have installed. Ill let you know.

Thanks Slowbrick,

If you could keep me in mind, that would be great. Where abouts are you located?

Cheers,

Ken.

It's been a little while so I thought I'd see how things were going. Ramrod, Blackdynamite, have you got/do you want to part with your 3.31 gears yet?

Or is there anyone else out there with an axle assemble or just crownwheel and pinion, 3.31:1 ratio for a 240?

Cheers, Ken.

If the others don't sell perhaps Berry Motor Group or Voldat or Mason's Prestige would have it.

Thanks, I rang both, unfortunately neither have seen anything for quite a while now. Anyone else out there in Volvo world have any leads?
