  • 940 vs S90 front suspension interchange

Ok, so a 940 (and early 960) has an “old style” style with an integrated stub axle, like so:

Whereas the S90 (and late 960) have a “FWD style” strut that bolts to the upright like so:

You can’t swap the control arms, due to the different mounting point on the body.

I want to fit a S90 upright and strut onto a 940. The balljoint is the same part number, so it will physically bolt up, but I am trying to get my head around the offset.

940s have wheels with +20~22mm offset, whereas the S90 wheels are +43~46mm.

So… where is the difference?

@Spac

The different body mount by the footwells is the only difference

The sheet metal parts are swappable

I've already done it to the tentacle wagon with minimal effort

Volvo or skandix still have the sheet metal bits (much like the bolt on ones for a 240) available for welding onto a 940

I would prefer the 940 control arms/castor rod setup, over the the wishbone of the S90.

The side effect is that... just take a measurement of the distance between the holes subframe vs ball joint holes on the 940 and the late 960

Then you can shorten or lengthen the 940 arm (outbound of the caster rod) to match the 960

Then the 960 upright will bolt in

      Yeah, good point.

      Also

I have pics of the group A sheet metal arms for the 7/9 platform if you want 100% adjustability

I would like these pics. castor adjustment would be nice

          apologies,

I just found the pics i took in june of 2012 and I got detailed pics of the front suspension of the group a 240 but only rear suspension on the 740

this is clearly reason enough to go back to gothenburg

I just took these pics at a friend's place if they are of any help, the suspension knuckle is from a late 960, the coilover tubes are custom made using Koni parts, they take 240 shocks. the other strut is standard 740.

I'm about to make a set of coilovers for my 960 using 850 struts, I can post pics when that happens. the mounting points to the knuckle are the same as 960, the shank at the top between the shock shaft and the thread is smaller but that's easily fixed with a spacer tube, the sway bar mounting points are different but it's easy to modify the original sway bar link or make a new one.

Bumping old thread but does anyone know if any 'bolt in' affair type coilovers like BC's that work with late model s90s?

Any competent fabrication shop will be able to weld on the S90 “ears” to a pair of coilovers from pretty much any FWD/AWD car.

Strut tops are a PITA for a 7/9. Either buy one of the few available types, make something custom, or use the standard tops (which may be easy or difficult, depending on what coilovers you are using).
