My 1990 740 GLE at 210ks is having some transmission problems such as slippage in low gears (strangely seems worse when the A/C is on).
I'm wondering what the best options are for fixing it as I don't want a manual.
Is the 940/960 box the same? Stronger?
Can it be repaired and made better? Newer torque converters?
Is it better to just get another 2nd hand box?
What am I likely to be up for to recondition it?
Thanks for your help.
Brad
Hi
I've just joined and read your post.
The 940 box is the same so it will fit. But if your GLE as the B234 the gear ratios are different. 960 box has a lot of electronic controls, not worth the effort to try and fit even if it could be done.
10 or so years ago a Volvo reman exchange box (AW71L) cost around $2500.
Might be worth taking it to a trans shop and getting a diagnosis. You could then decide if you want to tackle it yourself.
Best of luck.

There are 5 versions of the AW7x as found in Volvo's
AW70
AW70L
AW71
AW71L
AW72L
The AW70,70L are used on NA 8v motors only it is the base configuration of the AW7x series
The L designates that it has a locking TQ that will lock up under lower throttle settings in 4th gear only
The AW71/71L are used on all Turbo and most 93+ 940non-turbo models
It has a higher number of springs in each of the clutch packs (nearly double the number in the 70 series)
Some of the later ones also have a higher number of steel and clutch disks per clutch packs
There are also some differences in the valve body which result in higher line pressure
The L designates that it has a locking TQ that will lock up under lower throttle settings in 4th gear only
The AW72L was found in the 16v models only
It has slightly different gear ratios as compared to the 70/71 and also has a slightly different setting on the Governor to reduce the amount of line pressure bled off above 5500RPM
It generally is found with the same number of springs and clutches as found in the 70
However I have seen Volvo rebuilt units with the higher numbers as found in the 71
All 72's sold (AFAIK) were the lockup models

Thanks for the info Phil1a Bear, very useful to know.
I haven't got home again to drive Inga but my suspicion is that it is related to brakes rather than gearbox.
