hi.
I read somewhere that coils are not prone to failing on redblocks?, but my experience has shown otherwise.
the 242, and both 940's have had coil issues, but now i'm a bit stumped.
my question, what is the best coil to run on an aussie spec 1991 940 ( bosch type ignition ) ?
they appear on all photos etc, to be a standard type of canister coil, like a gt40 or a msd blaster.
my daughter's 1991 940 just wont run properly on any coil I buy, except for an old one off my 240 sedan. they either wont fire it at all, or run rough, or run intermittently. but the 30 year old coil goes great in it.
any advice would be appreciated.

after a lot of googling, I have half answered my question, but further imput would be welcomed.
it appears the standard coil is a bosch 0 221 118 351. in Volvo spec its called a 1346071 as well as other codes. its also the coil is the same for several other makes such as alfa and fiat, but with a different code.
I could not find specs, but one site ( volvoclub.org.uk) suggest the spec is-
primary 0.6 to 0.9 ohms, secondary 7 to 8.5 Kohms
I am not an electronics expert, nor am I certain that the uk spec is the same as the oz spec.
however.
msd blaster 2 has a published spec of - primary 0.7 and secondary 4.5Kohms
if these numbers are correct, then an msd blaster 2 is not suitable for a 940 ?
I have not been able to find a spec for bosch gt40.
it seems the best solution is to get a bosch standard coil from fcp ( ipd do not list them. ) ??

I've never had issues with coils myself in 200, 000+km of driving 80s volvos. I would be looking elsewhere myself. Crank angle sensorcan issues too.

time to diagnose, like you did for me alex ;P
next question is whats the car doing. maybe the hall sensor is shot, or the wire is faulty.

They run a crank trigger sensor compared to the earlier lh 2.2 system on lh 2.4

thanks. its definitely only a coil issue I am trying to sort. ( on this car, at this time )
I contacted bosch in Melbourne, and they advise that 0221118351 does not exist. so I am now ordering from fcp, along with a few other bits needed at the moment. I will post here the results when fitted in a week or so.
the coil that was on the car when I bought it, was the original bosch 0221118351 ( that does not exist ), but it intermittently overheated and failed whilst hot. I replaced it with a new gt40, but it ran very rough. I replaced that with another new gt40, but it wouldn't even start. but, as mentioned earlier, it does run well on an older coil out of a 1985 240. my sons 940 currently has an msd blaster 2 in it, and runs a little rough, so i will be changing that one also as a test. therefore, subject to testing the new coils in a week or so, it appears the lesson is that 'coils aint coils'. ( apologies to Sol )

How odd.

ok, the results.
this took a bit of time, as when I got the coils from fcp, I noted that they have the 'bougicord' type fitting for the HT cable. so I ordered 2 of those cables as well. once I had all the bits, I fitted one to the 1991 940, and posted the second to my son in Townsville, to fit into the 1992 940.
both cars now run silky smooth and properly thru all the rev range.
therefore, if ever thinking of replacing a coil on a 940, my advice is to go for the standard original bosch 0221118351. ( Volvo 1346071 )
I would go as far as to assume this for all red blocks. original coil to original other sparkly bits.
And never assume a gt40 or a msd2 is a direct replacement.
also a little tip on coil problems- I found in both the 1991 940 and the 242gt, that if the car did not fire, the coil was hot to touch. I wrapped my hand around the coil as a 'heat sink' to cool it. then the car would fire up ( with me back inside the cabin ) this is why I knew I had a coil issue, on both cars.
hope this helps someone. I might now post some second hand gt40 coils on fleabay.

It's still not a common thing to happen but interesting to know the experience.
